Determine model and year model of a General Electric Dishwasher

Hi Folks,

Been lurking but not posting so far, but next weekend we will go to Stockholm Sweden to dismantle a complete kitchen most likely built somewhere between late 50s and mid 60s.

It's a beautifully preserved kitchen, typical Swedish style, and from one of there more affluent areas of Stockholm. In a effort to exactly date the kitchen I thought of taking help here. It has a GE dishwasher, and it looks like an model that must been sold both domestically in the US and exported to Europe. I've attached a picture of it. It's the only pictures I have as I've not yet seen it in person. Hopefully someone here can tell me what model or model range and what years it was sold.

This was the very first GE dishwasher with a rotating wash arm. From 1961/1962 to 1963/1964.

Thanks for the info. I did some investigations on the Eletrolux full height freezer and it's made between 58 and 65, this nails it down further.

Do you have the name if I want to buy the owners manual?

Jorm, I found a 1962 sales brochure in the manuals & literature section for the GE dishwasher line. This is a model SD202. There is no owners manual for the 1962 model dishwashers. The closest in the electronic library is a use and care manual for a 1965 dishwasher.

Yep Thats an SD202. If it works its an keeper. These were really good Dishwashers. Even the swedish konsumentverket gave the machine good results in test. The only bad thing was that it has emanel instead of stainless steel inside. The emanel rust with rust, but stainless steel doesnt.

First GE Drop Door DWs

Hi Jorm, Neat that you found one of these early GE DWs, it must have had almost no usage, you are correct the plastic coated steel tank rusted very easily on these DWs, if the machine was run once a day they seldom lasted much over 10 years and never over 20.

 

In the US these were poor performers even in this early period of DW development, GE never built a really good performing DW till the early 80s.

 

But in any event this DW sounds like a fun project, let us know how it works out.

Their next model in this series was named 422D and has many more programs. It had 4 buttons and one program timer. My family had an 422 D in the house they moved in around 1983.

That dishwasher lasted until 24 December 1998. Such a bad day on christmas eve to break but still it was a work horse and never had any repairs so the quality on that one must have been better or they were lucky maybe.
