Help Support :

It's far too early

for that sort of diagnosis, tho' the risk is definitely there. Only after your sister has had time to detox, rebuild her nutritional deficits, cope with the emotional and physical trauma of her illness can a firm diagnosis be made.
Not all alcohol related dementia is irreversible, by the by.
Here's a useful little article on the topic, in case you're interested.
Hang in there and, as several have said - get some support for yourself.
ps: Here in Europe, we've moved away from the 'crash and burn' approach to a more pro-active, early intervention approach. You just can't rebuild some things.

That's why it's important that you go to Al-Anon because you're going to get your hopes up, thinking it's all over now and then all of a sudden another relapse, then another. I strongly urge you to go so you can cope with the very likely possibility that she will relapse again. May take a month, may take 6 months, but there is such a strong possibility it will happen again before the nightmare ends and you're at your wits end.

Yay!

David,
Thanks for the update.
It sounds like your sister is doing well, and is going with the program.
It is a great feeling for someone in Detox to talk with other patients, and find out that they are not alone.
I would not sweat the Dementia just now. She, like you said is very heavily medicated on detox medication. They will start to taper this soon, and you will then see the difference in her thinking pattern.
I am happy for you and your brother and law that it is all going so well!
I know you both fell great, and can start to see the rainbow at the end. It will get brighter for you both, day by day.
Hugs!
Brent

Another update on my sister

My sister has been in detox since Thursday 10-6-08. She has not had a drop of alcohol in 7 days. She will be released from the detox unit tomorrow. She MUST complete an follow-up out patient program beginning that night after they release her.

My wife and I will celebrate our 22nd wedding aniversary next Saturday. You can count on one thing there will not be any cell phones turned on next weekend. We are disappearing from the family's radar for a day or two.

Thanks for everyone's Emails, advice and information you have shared with me.

I really apprecaite it!

God Bless

It is a horrible thing to go through for the person, the friends and the family. I will pray for your sister and your family.

Today is my 4th sobriety anniversary from alcohol and pain killers. I made it through on the support of faith, family, and friends. I hope she does well.
