I'm sure a lot was nasty, but you can clean/fix up nasty.
I remember one time coming home with an old typing table I got for a dollar. My roommate's girlfriend asked if I was on the way to the junkyard with it. It looked bad, just, dirt, etc.
A good cleaning, sanding, and painting. It looked brand new. I still use it in my house.
I just love a project, but that's me. I do agree that you do need a shower when you leave a place like that, however sometimes there are treasures to be found (as the Zenith, Chrysler, and Kenmore's show).
