Can Only Go By P&G's Version For The USA Market, Downy

For that product there is very little difference between the professional versions offered and those sold to consumers. Aside from coming in larger sizes, various containers for easier dosing by systems, and perhaps more concentrated, under the bonnet so to speak again there isn't much difference.

If you like the product and it's on offer I say go for it.

Now there are various types of commercial fabric softeners/conditioners you need to look out for; those that contain sours (acids) in particular because they are rather potent and can be dangerous stuff. But we're not on that right now.

Large Sizes Of P&G Fabric Softeners

You want to be careful about purchasing more P&G brand fabric softeners than can be used in a given period.

A year or so ago managed to nab several bottles of Downy "free and gentle" FS at a very good price. Put one into service and stashed the rest.

Since one is not really big on FS it took a while to finish up the first bottle, however noticed something odd as time went on; the FS began to curdle and glop up like clotted cream. Well after a few weeks the stuff was no good so rang up P&G to find out what happened.

The nice customer support girl asked for some information from the bottle include the date code. She then explained that Downy fabric softeners have a shelf life, after that expires they can begin to degrade and the results were what one was seeing.

Ditto!

Was using a softener called "Fluffy Summer Breeze." I was only using it for Bed-Sheets (of my own) in our Simpson TL machine. Sheets were washed monthly (maybe?) and I bought a small bottle. 3 months later, I go to dose for my wash, and I found something akin to mucus (or snot, if you life). Went to the sink, tipped the bottle and waited the best part of a minute for it to creep out the bottle: Then SLOP! I swear it was like Corn-Starch goop stuff you can make. Eew!

Now, with the Miele FL machine we have, I use the stuff on my clothes. I find that "regular" use seems to create a thin layer of the stuff (Snot) in the FS dispenser over time. One tends to wonder what the interior of the machine (The part of the drums you can't see!) with this stuff. So, I regularly clean my dispenser (which is meant to be self cleaning), then use Vinegar for Softener on a Cottons 95º with Pre-Wash (and LOTS of detergent too! Omo doesn't suds then

In my LIMITED experience

with commercial/institutional Dawn (Fairy liquid) and Cascade (Fairy powder), and this is limited......the only differences I can tell are in labelling and price. The institutional labels are cheaper per use.

My take

is and I could be wrong but IMHO the professional version is slightly more fluid as its often used in a dosing system and needs to be pumped in, the concentrated one is often too gloopy and won't move down the pipes quick enough to get the dose to the machine before the timed pump stops.
