Is there any difference between the belt drive Kenmore base plates? In other words if I found a sbort shaft style could I have a new longer shaft pressed in to it? Would ever8ything line up. so to speak? I am finding it impossible to find an original style.

There are a number of differences...

Here's what I can tell you:

Baseplates from 24" machines won't work. Tub bolt mounting holes and major dimensional differences are the primary reasons among others.

Baseplates from 196? To summer 1981 large tub machines won't work either for tub bolt and drain grommet reasons.

Baseplates from all 29" machines summer 1981 and newer won't work either as they had their tub bolt holes realigned somewhat to fit the revised tub geometry that applied to both capacities from then to 1987.

What might work is a 1978 to summer 1981 standard capacity 29" machine. These used the same outer tubs as the 1950s to 1977 models. Short centerpost, but as you said you might be able to press in one appropriate to your machine.

There ARE donor machines out there though with the right baseplate...you may just have to be patient in searching for it!
