I replaced the gear case in my direct drive washer. Model number WTW5600VQ0. The previous one broke mid cycle and was agitating and spinning at the same time. I am not the original owner of this machine so I don’t know all of its history. However, since replacement, during agitation there is almost like a grinding type sound as tho something is rubbing with each stroke as it agitates, however it is agitating just like it is supposed to. The sound is amplified during neutral drain and then after spin when the brake engages you can really hear it. Spin is just fine, no abnormal noises. Has anyone experienced this before?

Yes sir, new FSP gear case. I thought you could buy a repair kit, but I haven’t found that part number yet. I recorded an audio recording of it by holding my phone down by the machanism, trying to figure out how to upload it to YT.

Gearcase

I always purchase rebuilt transmissions, manufactured by Coecentric. The new ones are very loud, especially during neutral drain.

Could you post a video though replicating the noise?

Here are links to the noise.  It is slightly louder due to the location of the camera for recording, the drain is by far the loudest.  Is the gear case actually doing anything in neutral drain tho?

Noises

Those all sound normal to me and I'm sure others will tell you how OCD I am when it comes to these machines. I'm not a fan of that neutral drain sound, but when I had a new gearcase in my 94 machine, it pretty much sounded just like that.

Do you mind sharing the information for Coecentric? Thanks! The agitation on your video sounds normal to me compared to what I hear on mine. I do hear some of that noise in your neutral drain but much softer. At least it seems like I didn’t do something wrong. I was concerned something else broke when the first one failed.

It’s definitely loud. Whirlpool is hit and miss with these. I had one that was completely locked up from the factory. They seem to only last about 3-5 years. Very unfortunate that they are building them this way.

CoreCentric in the past offered board repair service directly to consumers via CoreCentricSolutions.com.  They shifted that service several years ago to a storefront for remanufactured boards (with an option of send-in-for-repair on some items) and other parts through PartSimple (which existed previously as a parts source without so much association to CoreCentric).  Service technicians/companies and parts wholesalers can interact directly with CoreCentricSolutions for board repairs, consumers must go through PartSimple or what may be offered on eBay.

Moreso lack of retooling ... the casting molds for transmission cases and gears are deteriorated and there's no impetus to invest in replacing them.  Thus better results can often be obtained by refurbishing an existing transmission with a neutral-drain kit and new agitator shaft, oil seal (input shaft) and (top) cover seal if needed.

Whirlpool, direct, drive transmissions

The new direct drive transmissions had a lot of problems a few years ago, we got a lot of 25 of them and I’ve had no problems with them over the last year or so with excessive noise or early failures.

About three years ago I bought 6 transmissions from core centric that were rebuilt I was not impressed with them. Three of them had bad agitator shafts Right off the bat, they had badly rusted scored lines Worn on the agitator shafts so they wouldn’t seal properly against the oil seals.

I do believe in many cases you’re better off rebuilding what you have unless it’s in really bad shape.

replacement transmission replaced

Just to close this thread out. The replacement transmission just got louder the more it was used and at times just sounded like it was metal on metal (esp during neutral drain). MidSouth agreed to do a part exchange on the transmission and the second one I brought home (built in April of this year according the sticker on the box) sounds much more like you would expect. It is much quieter and sounds like a normal DD transmission.

I have decided I need to do a good cleanup on this machine which will bring a few more questions which I will put in another post as time permits.
