Direct Drive Pump Question

I just realized there are different WP direct drive pumps out there. The one original to my KitchenAid washer (<span style="font-size: 12pt;">(3363892)</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> has a black flab inside the larger opening (see photo below). What is this for? I would assume to keep noise down? None of my other direct drives have this, even the older style gray pump. 3363394 Any insight would greatly be appreciated.  </span>

They had those on the real high-end machines. Whirlpool/Kenmore Catalysts definitely had them, the older Kenmore 90 Plus series machines also had them. Partially to reduce noise, partially to prevent back-siphoning. Even some older gray pumps had the flap, E.G. older Kitchenaids would have probably had that.
