It is raining non stop,heavily here and I was surfing on cable only to my amazement in finding a special on PBS promoting the music I ,and many others on this website,danced the night away almost countless hours to these songs.One of the hosts is K.C from K.C. and the Sunshine Band.So far,there have been other artists like Peaches and Herb,Irene Cara,Hues Corporation and The Tramp. I have and always will,loved the music,the dancing and the joy and happiness that it always brings.
I would become entirely entranced and be the "Queen of the dance floor" and usualy wound up dancing in my Daisy Dukes or red,green,blue,pink or yellow bib overalls,straps down,matching color Rebocks and Swatch,a matching bandana wrapped around my head and either high on pot or coke or both and two bottles of poppers.One for me and another to pass around and up on the huge speaker box all alone but loving every second of it.Never did wind up waiting outside after last call to see who wanted to go home.Just had to pick who it was I wanted to take the offer of luv for that night from.Never meaning to break any hearts at all---but know a few I did.Sorry guys!I mean it! LOL
 
Ahhh, the days...

when I had the energy to stay up past 11:00 PM! I've got many a fond memory of nights on the dance floor.

I still have a warm spot for classic disco, still have my collection of 12 inch vinyl extended-plays, and enjoy a couple of Internet disco stations.

So many years have passed since then...sigh!

It Really Began...

...With "Rock the Boat," by the Hues Corporation. For weeks and weeks in '74, that song packed the dance floor anywhere it was played.

Anyone still got their Nik-Nik shirts, puka-shell necklaces, or high heels?

OMG, Age does an excellent job! Now I can stand much more! I can dance more, I have much more fun than 30 years ago.

Age make us think better, and act better. All our fears are gone.

Of course you'll never see me on those "Rave" electronic parties that starts on friday night and go to sunday night non stop.

But I love going to a dance club, I still have the mood (and resistance) to dance all night long like John Travolta and go back home at 8 or 9 am. Specially with 70's and 80's songs. (But I love some 90's too and also some of these "techno" stuff because only museums can live only with the past and I'm not a museum) As I always say, if it sounds like a pneumatic hammer or a vintage washing machine, I like it.

Please don't make me listen country music, rap or the brazilian songs. They make me want to throw up.

 
I was invited here in April and got here in December.They had a deck where I would turn on the cabel network and go to "strobe" where the non stop disco music is played 24/7.I have a work out from 6PM to?.The guys here (who by the way are straight and full of testosterone)hated hearing the beat and went and,while I stayed and helped a friend,Cheryl move from Honolulu tio here,they built another deck just outside my lenie.I put string lights from "I Love Lucy" and lights made of different clothes hanging on a line to dry.I also put a set of 6 different speakers for suround sound and lined the lower screaned wall with bamboo.I tiled the floor with black and white checkerboard linoleum tiles and put shelveing along the waist level of the walls.The ceiling is a roof made of clear fiberglass panels and a miror globe hangs in the middle.last night,I danced for 4.75 hours as it poured down rain.I danced naked and had a blast.No problems,no intrusions,no wories.Just lots of sweat and enjoyment being free and fealing young again.My favorite exercises are dancing,swimming laps and bicycling distances.Here though because of the steap hills,a motorised bicycle really helps.I rode 40 miles one day to go to Hilo.It would have taken me 2.25 hours in Florida and Texas.Here,it took 6.I came home by putting the bike on the front of the bus.got home around 9:30 PM

In February of 1985,I was with my best friend,Donald,in Baltimore. We had eaten some peyote and had to leave the restaurant,Petro's,where we had gone to eat dinner.We had been seated in the center of the restaurant and,to this day,have no clue,other than our reaction to the herb we had congested,why we began laughing hystericaly and caused quite an audience with our fellow customers there.Even the owner,chef and waiters were laughing with us.We laughed non stop having to have our meals put up for to-go and taking them home.We put it all in Don's frig and proceded on eating more peyote and doing a few doobees we rolled and took along with us proceeding on around 10PM to the Hippo where we danced till 1AM and moved on to Cignal which was an after hours club that openened at midnight and you were allowed to stay after hours as long as you brought your own booz.

We were basicly tripping our asses off and dancing non-stop.During our visit and all of the sudden,there came Ms. Evelyn Thomas who sang "High Energy" and it at that time was the number one gay disco song.As she aproached the dance floor to perform on stage,she grabbed me and walked me up onto the platform to assist her in singing her song"High Energy" which at that time was my absolute favorite.Little did she, or anyone else there(other than Chuck,the D.J.)knw that I knew the words,verbatem,to that song from going to mfavorite record store,Music Liberated and receiving a promo of that actual song two days prior to her performance,So,I sang along with her and danced my ass of on stage as we performed what Evelyn said was the absolute best performance she had ever done anywhwere.She left after three different songs we sang and danced together on and just left.

My friends and I continued on with our own little group and about an hour later,these two huge,muscular,well dressed black men came onto the dance floor and litteraly grabbed me and donald and escorted us upstairs.We actualy assumed we were being arrested for drug posession!As we arived at the door,they opened it and there she was,Evelyn Thomas,arms outstretched to invite us to the wildest party I ever attended!We stayed and played all night long and went along with them in the limo to the airport to see her off. I received an autographed photo and promo album from her signed an kissed with golden ink and golden lip gloss!To this day,every time I speak with Don,he reminds me of the fabulous times we had together.Those days may be long gone but the fond memories of the good times shared with many others whose eyes would light up as I arived geared up to dance,dance,dance and dressed for sucksex :)I would be so glad to just go back and spend a night at the Hippo and dance to the music getting lost and not responding to anyone's attention.It was like being in a fucking trance until the music stopped.Chuck parsons,the D.J at the Hippo would always wait until my arival,usualy anywhere from 9PM to 10:30PM,to play my favorites or new songs he knew I'd jump up to.It was as thow Chuck just automaticaly knew my beat and would stay with it for hours. A few times,the crowd dancing along with me would circle around me as I would be directly under the globe and the light man,Jack,would lower it right above my head,just enough for me to know it was there but not touching my head.I would hop,twirl and squat raising my hands and shaking my bootie hours on end non stop.No wonder I only weighed 135!!!

What a wonderful story. I love that song! I'll have to use one of the playlists I have it in, when I go to the gym this afternoon.

I do think you should continue to go dancing sometimes though! There is no age limit to this activity, the last time I checked, not that your age, according to your profile, is that high anyway.

Here is another song that was played a lot at least in my area back then (and now, when you go to retro disco nights, which fortunately in my area there are two each weekend). I had it on the playlist with High Energy, and heard it at the gym this afternoon!

I'm going to look up some of those other songs whose names I don't recognize. I bet I will know most of them, even if I don't recognize them immediately on paper. I actually go out far more now than I ever did then, but have always kept up with music I liked, regardless of what I was or was not doing.

 
Disco songs....

My all time favorite was "I love the nightlife."

I haven't gone dancing too often since my favorite club was demolished to make room for a baseball stadium. They had an outdoor dance floor right under the Capitol Dome. It was sick wild....

I'll always miss that place.

 
For Me:

The anthem for that entire era was Paul Jabara's "Dance" from the "Shut Out" album. This was not "Last Dance," which he also wrote and which Donna Summer made such a big hit, but a completely different song.

I first heard "Dance" in the movie "Mother, Jugs and Speed," starring Raquel Welch, who played neither Mother nor Speed.

"Stormy weather" Ms. Viola Wills, " I am weeeeaaaarrry all the time". Great times at the Parade in NOLA, they always had "Dorothy Gale" and her twister on the screen, while Ms Wills provided the vocals.
 
I most remember the mid-70's from a variety of tunes... not just disco, but also stuff like Maria Muldaur "Midnight at the Oasis" (which really seemed to sum up the bar scene), "Really Love to See You Tonight (England Dan and John Fortcoli), as well as the usual disco - Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Silvestri, etc.

Looking through my old 45 collection... including some 80's stuff - Tavares "Don't take away the music", Go-go's "Our lips are sealed", "We Got The Beat", Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes "Bad Luck", Undisputed Truth "You + Me = Love", Vicki Sue Robinson "Turn The Beat Around", plus a bunch of real oldies like "96 Tears" etc....
 
So,what happened?

If there are so many of us who were right there during the great disco era,how dit it all go to pot? All of the guys here absolutely hate it. They're more into acid rock,heavy metal and rap.Two of them were actualy bartenders at gay discoteques in Georgia and Miami Florida.One of them gave me his daily journal from that era when he was a fake gay man who tried to swindel cocaine via the gay crowds there.He and his friend assumed the main dealers importing the drug illegaly were gay and pretended to be gay themselves but found out later that wasn't true and moved on.He hates disco music,claims he never sucked or fucked any men and He became an ice addict.He has now been clean for twenty years.He just drinks beer from sun up to sun down.The good side of this is that we never run out!Between that and the 420 which is massive here and fields of this are legaly plentiful.There is a physician that gives a physical for $25 and gives you a card that legalizes your posession and use of pot.Up to 1/2 an ounce!A few months ago,I went to a double birthday party in Wiepeo (YPO) and had to drive through a field full and at its peak ready to harvest using a John Deer.You got high just from the aroma!If you are stopped by a police officer and show them your card proving you're using it for medicinal reasons,you are not arrested nor is your pot taken away from you.Times are changing and the beaurocrats who used to have a cap on this have all either died or somehow changed their own personal views on it.I can honestly say that I successfully quit smoking tobacco for almost twenty years now but that doesn't mean I don't smoke.I have never heard of anyone aquiring cancer or any other illness from smoking pot nor any major crimes commited by a stoner.I feel a lot less uncomfortable not having to worry about getting taken in and charged for posession with intention to distribute.The other islands here are far from being that leanient Especialy O'ahu where they used to film the show, "Hawaii Five 0" with the late, great actor,Jack Lord.In fact,most of the stores like Dollar Days here have all the parifinalia openly available and cheap.From bongs to papers. From rollers to screans.From corn cob pipes to glass pipes and from clear papers to flavored ones.The most expensive glass pipe I've seen here was $45. Mine was $12.It's shaped like a penis and has different colored lines all throughout.It is about 7"from bowl to mouthpiece and I clean it by pouring alcohol in a coffee mug,placing the pipe in and microwaving it for two minutes on high.Once removed,I turn on my spiget and run high presure hot water through the bowl and then use a Q-tip to remove any other loose residue.Afterwords,it looks like new. The only downside on these neat glass bowls is they break easily by dropping them and the people who drop them are rarely the owners.I have lost three so far but do have back up for futrure screwups.
