Discount on Villaware Waffle Iron

An FYI for anyone interested, Jarden is offering a pretty hefty discount on Villaware's V2004 classic (not Belgian) waffle maker: $27 + shipping. Williams-Sonoma is charging $60 for the same model, Amazon's price is $43.

The V2004 isn't listed on Jarden's website, so if you're interested you neeed to call and inquire about it. Apparently most people prefer Belgian-type waffles, but we've always liked the thinner/classic/less crispy type.

I note that these are fairly attractive with die cast polished aluminum housing, as well as the coveted "Waffle-tone" feature that beeps when the waffles are done. I have a small round chrome Belgian version and I'm happy enough with it, although I also prefer regular over Belgian waffles.

VillaWare makes decent stuff. I don't need a waffle iron, but if I was in the market I'd probably snag one of these.

Before ordering one of these, we looked at what Sears and Walmart had on their shelves, and we were amazed that any of them could pass safety and UL testing. In most cases the housings were all plastic, and many of them felt like they would literally fall apart in our hands. Many of them used 600 watt heating elements, which is enough to make waffles that look like slightly toasted Wonder bread.

And it's not as if these waffle makers were any less expensive. They ranged from $20-$70.

Like all other product searches in the last ten years, we wound up looking at each other and asking who buys this crap. Apparently someone does.

No nonstick coating!

The thing that makes me crazy about waffle irons and such as I HATE NONSTICK COATING.

You can't have an appliance get hot enough, and anything that kills birds if exposed to it can't be good for me either.

I have a 50s vintage waffle iron with an aluminium reversible plate - one side for waffles, the other for grilling sandwiches.

Thank god for Le Cruset and Lodge cast iron, not to mention pre-2000 corningware and some stainless steel....I won't use non first world cookware at all, believing that most of it contains toxins that are banned in US/Can/Europe.

I love cast iron and stainless steel, but not for making waffles. Vintage aluminum units work great.

As for Teflon/PTFE, look closer at the research before you buy into the hysteria. We have six pet birds so we have a real interest in this subject. PTFE doesn't outgas at all, I mean nada, unless it's overheated well above 500F. We've been using non-stick cookware for 30+ years without any ill effects to our birds.

I'm not hysterical, but I'm skeptical - of both the claims that it is harmless, and the claims that it is not! So I figure it is easier not to use it since I don't find it is a big deal for me not to have it.

Yes, I agree, cast iron et al is not good for making waffles, but the aluminium is. It is nice to cook in tho.
