I was doing some web software development research last week and happened to stumble across a programming blog where the writer gave me an idea of how to essentially keep the file name of each thread the same (no matter how many replies) and yet mark thread back to unread status on the index page and turn it back from purple to blue whenever its replied to. This change will allow us to post or email links directly to threads now without suds-locking when the thread is replied to later.

So in plain English any active thread (active means it hasn't moved into the archives yet) that has been created or updated after noon today you will be able to copy the address of the thread and paste it on a website, in an email, etc and when the recipient clicks on the link it will go right to that thread even after its been replied to. No more suds-locking on old links that you might have posted (unless of course its old and has moved into the archives).

The way to tell if its been updated since noon today is if there is "?" in the address then yes its should work, such as:

if it looks like this:

than it is still in the old format yet and will not work yet but once its replied to it will convert to the new naming format.

So there.

Great more changes to learn. (Actually it sounds great)

As punishment you will have to (please?) post a pictrue of you and "little" Fred in speedos. ASAP.

Understood?

WELL. SIGH. I tried.

That is wonderful Robert. You sure are the greatest! It makes it indeed possible to post the direct link to the thread instead having to put a link to one of the forums and tell which thread it is. For me it's especially handy because I post a link to a thread in the German forums sometimes.

Thanks!!

Samantha,

Thank you.
You are a goodwitch.
Have you ever considered selling your services to Slate?

They could seriously use someone of your abilities.

Oh, gods, what did I just say?

Never mind - seriously, thank you!

Great! I was wondering if this change would ever be implemented. Many times I have emailed a few topics here, and if there has been a reply between the time I sent them the address and the time they open it, they'll get a "Sudslock."

YAY for changes that are for the better.....something that rarely happens in this day and age.

Now, if only we could "sticky" common topics at the top of the page :)

Does this mean if we click "refresh" in the browser while viewing a thread, if someone else posts a message in the meantime, we'll be able to see the new message without having to go back out to the index and jump back in again?

If so, good!
