Dish soap clogging dispenser

Hey guys... I usually use Dawn from costco but bought the Kirkland similar to dawn version in the picture... I had tried it a LOOONG time ago and forgotten why I never bought it again... I transfer it to one of those old dish bottles I have where the top lifts up and pushes down becuase I find those tops to be superior to the ones that are held on by plastic when you open them that often will break b4 finished using the product...

This stuff clogs my dispenser.. I go to squirt a bit out and nothing comes out, so I have to dissolve the clog with hot water, every couple of days. It's so annoying!! I understand the world has bigger problems and this is just a minor nuisance... and the stuff works GREAT other than it solidifying where it exits the dispenser... Dawn or Palmolive never did this...but I vaguely remember cheaper detergents of the past doing the SAME thing..

Is there anything I can add to it to prevent this? Rubbing alcohol maybe? Would adding more water help? Otherwise I just have to try to remember to wipe the top off after I squirt some out... I do know that when I'm done with this bottle, I will never buy it again because of this... even though I feel like it works just as well as Dawn.

Have you ever tried Palmolive ? That's the one I always use. It lasts quite awhile also. A little of that stuff goes a long way.

Mostly always Palmolive or Dawn.. but I gotta get through this firrst

for what extremely very little I wash by hand, I've always used Dawn.

Speaking of Dawn, I saw it in 5 gallon containers while at GFS today. I don't remember how much it was. I usually use it, but currently have Palmolive.

Yes, most everything goes in the dishwasher...but I still use dish soap... You know, cleaning the sink or those rare things I don't run through the dishwasher here and there, etc.. I also make bottles of homemade cleaner using dish soap, alchol, peroxide, essential oil, water into a spray bottle. It just blows my mind that these cheaper detergents have something in them to keep clogging from happening, while the less expensive ones clog... and I thought Kirkland was supposed to be as good or BETTER than the national brands... I always hear that about store brands how they are just as good or sometimes better... then something like this happens and it makes me really wonder about that.

Hi Mark, yes the cheaper brands have something in it that keeps from clogging. It’s called water, try watering down the Kirkland soap. The Kirkland soap is probably superior, but it’s more concentrated.

I would never buy a brand name of anything like this products like Dawn and Palmolive are just overpriced because of all the advertising.

funny that Mark is talking about this. We've been using this product for quite some time and see the same thing.

My solution is to transfer some the liquid into an empty Ajax or Dawn smaller size bottle. The dispensing caps have a larger opening than Kirkland, thus less likely to clog over time. So the big Kirkland container is essentially a "refill" source.

Otherwise, the detergent works great.

That's what I do.. I transfer some into an OLD dish detergent bottle that has the push up, puish down on top to open/close...because those were so much better..

The last couple of days I've been more conscious about giving the top a wipe after I squirt some out... and it's A OK doing that...the only thing is remembering to do it.. not that it's a huge deal anyway, it's just annoying. When I say it clogs, I mean NONE will come out.. that's how clogged it gets.

I do understand one of the companies that already makes dish soap makes this for them and that kirkland is just a name...but whatever they're doing to it, (probably leaving an ingredient out to keep this from happening) it behaves like ultra cheap dishwashing detergent when it comes to clogging/solidifing at the end of the cap where it's dispensed...

It's not any thicker than Dawn or Palmolive...it's about the same in that aspect... about the same amount of strength/suds... but I feel like this has more essential oil in it.. I can almost smell the methol or eucalyptus somewhat when I'm using it.

Just have to wipe it off each time and it should be OK...

The amount of water just determines the strength of a product, adding more wouldn`t help much to keep it from drying out.

Alcohol and salts are added for the perfect texture or viscosity.
Alcohol among other things can make detergent mixtures more liquid or "runny", salts make things thicker thus are often used in excess to make us believe a product is richer and more concentrated as it really is.
Both are usually used simultaneously to get the desired results.

What the Kirkland soap is missing are humectants like propylene glycol or glycerin which the manufacturer seems to consider unnecessary for the proper function of the product (washing dishes) as long as the lid of the original bottle is closed after each use.
Apparently they expect you to do this which is kind of stupid considering the large size of the bottle the stuff is sold in.
I`d put the blame on Costco not the contract manufacturer because in the end it`s the one who orders who determines the outcome.

Very true about the Kirkland dish soap. I have been using it for years and I just rinse off any signs of buildup at the nozzle. Otherwise, I am very happy with it.

Yeah... to be clear... the nozzle was/is closed after each use... It's the residue left on the nozzle after squirting some out that is left exposed to the air that's on the outside of the nozzle (if not wiped or rinsed off) that dries/clogs.. so wiping/rinsing is the solution...at least I THINK it is... so far after a few days no clogs.. What's crazy is I never even thought to do this until I started this post.
