dishwasher question

hey everyone, i wanted to know if anyone knew what other vintage dishwasher uses a thermostat with a reset button? there has to be other machines out there that use some sort of set up like this. the westinghouse dishwasher i have here keeps tripping its thermostat and i can figure out why..would the machine being to full of water cause this.. by that i mean causing to much strain on the motor and there by causing to much draw. the motor stays cool its just the thermostat that gets hot.. any ideas?? thanks so much chris

Chris, I am guessing this is an impeller machine. If so, yes if there's too much strain on the motor because of overfilling it will kick out. My grandmother had a GE roll-out in an apt. whose timer was bad and it would fill/rinse, skip drain, fill again and then attempt to spray. It always caved in. I had to put it on drain, once the motor cooled off, and do that a couple of times b4 it would drain the water. ugh. Ahh, the age of 10.5

i sort of had a feeling it was to full..it only made sense to me that to much water would do that..the manual says the water level should be around half way up the impellor maybe 2/3 the way..but when it stopped running i looked in there and the water level was over the top of the impellor..so that makes sense..glad someone knew what i was talking about.. thanks so much for the info!!

An overfill condition will draw too much current on the motor Chris. Did you change the water valve? There might have been a flow restrictor in the original valve.

Older flow restricting washers wear out and the hole gets bigger. You can compensate by easing the water supply valve closed until you have the proper fill. That's what John did for the Maytag portable used in the shop to wash refrigerator innards.

If you did change the water valve, then adhere to the above message. If not, did you happen to upset the float in the machine any kind of a way? You can adjust that. But yes, too much water it trips.

Could be something simple as.........

Try backing off your tap on the sink. You might have more water pressure than you need from it. I had a similar problem with my Westy DW.

I don't think this machine has a float of any sorts, but I do think it might have a pressure switch if I remember correctly. If the pressure switch is stuck in the "empty" position, then the filling wont stop until the fill increments run out on the timer. You might want to check the pressure switch out Chris. Take the hose off of the tub connection and blow into the hose, you should hear the pressure switch click on as you blow into the hose and click off as you release the air from the hose.

this machine has a time fill and i guess since i have really good water pressure it fills to much..i did rebuild the inlet valve..just have to remember to only turn on the fawcett half way and well be good to go..thanks
