On a completely DIFFERENT note - How many of us (yes, men and women alike) use disposable shaving razors? I use Gillette Sensor 3, and I figure I can get about a week of almost full-face shaving out of one (minus goatee and 'stache). These are still cheaper than buying blade refills for my non-disposable Gillette Sensor 3 handle (according to what Sam's Club charges for a mega pack).

For those of you who use disposable razors, about how many shaves can you expect to get out of a razor? Oh, the things my father never taught me.....

Two things: I have a more or less full beard. I trim the cheeks and the neck. I do this in the shower - I figure I get more than a week's worth out of a disposable Gillette, sometimes several weeks. I change them out when I can feel that it's scraping more than cutting.

I prefer shaving in the shower because the clean-up is much simpler... fewer "itchies", and regular bar soap works just fine as a "shaving cream".

I use the relatively new Gillette Fusion Power razor. It has several blades and vibrates; It gives me the closest shave I've ever had. NOTE: There is also a non-powered version (no vibrating) and it doesn't do as good a job. If you're thinking of trying it, pay the extra couple of bucks for the power version. You won't be disappointed.

I use my blades for 12 shaves---more than what you're supposed to, but I don't have problems with razor burn or ingrown hairs, so I continue to use it that many times.

There was a great article on shaving in Details a month or two ago. Now I follow their advice and shave twice; once downward (following the grain of the beard) and once upward (against the grain). Takes only a couple of extra minutes and, at least for me, gives an ultra-close shave. I used to have to shave again in the evening when going out, but don't have to now that I double-shave. Try it! Seemed like a lot of bother the first time, but now I wouldn't shave any other way. You won't believe how close the shave is.

And while I'm at it, I highly recommend Zirh shaving gel. It doesn't foam, so you can see exactly what you're doing and what you're leaving behind. You use a very thin layer of it, so the razor stays close to the skin. Smells wonderful, too.

In fact, the entire Zirh line is fantastic. The face wash (called CLEAN) is to die for. The scent alone is worth the (admittedly steep) price of admission. Here's a link.

Gillette Fusion Power

Hi Eugene,
I totally agree the Gillette Fusion Power is the best razor I have ever used. I have double shaved for as long as I can remember, first with the grain and then against and without doubt it gives the closest shave. Gillette grooming products are also very good; in general I find all P&G products to be of outstanding quality.

I like the sound of the Zirh range especially the shaving gel sadly I don't think they are available in the UK.

Bearded fellow turns thread toward appliances ;)

I too sport almost a full beard and a mustache; I have a Phillips trimmer to clean it up with, and I had to buy a Remington electric shaver when the batteries in my (recharge-only) Norelco died. I like the corded type of shavers and I've always wanted to have an old Norelco Tripple Header (not that I have much use for a shaver but still) -the kind that came in the hard box with the red velvet lining. I have the box of one that was my grandfather's (he had a beard like a steel wire brush and went through a Norelco shaver every couple years -while my father still has one his grandmother gave him when he turned 16!).

David---I've turned several friends onto the Gillette Fusion Power and they all love it. The cartridges are spendy, but it's a fantastic razor. Didn't know you had them in the UK, too. Great!

bpetersxx--- Sharpening razor cartridges? Never heard of such a thing. Do you sharpen and is the device in question pictured above?

I received a Fusion sample (non-vibrating) via postal mail, which was odd being as I hadn't requested one. Tossed it in a cabinet, tried it months later. I don't much care for the triple/quad/+ cartridges, they're physically larger, don't maneuver well around/under the nose. I use a double-blade (non-disposable) Atra. Cartridges are expen$ive so I tend to shave every 2nd or 3rd day (occasionally longer), and push them longer than they're designed to last. A surgically-close shave isn't necessary. :-)

No Disposables For Me

I have tried every disposable razor on the market and I can't stand any of them for long periods of time. Fine for occasional trips, but they don't give me a close shave with my heavy beard. And the name brand razors are so expensive when it comes to buying refill cartridges.
I have solved the problem thanks to my friends at the 99 cent only store. I found "Matrix 3" cartridges for 99 cents for a two-pack; the handle with one blade was the same price. I tried it--loved it--and have stocked up on enough Matrix 3 cartridges to keep me shaving through the end of the year--and I plan to buy more to give me close shaves through 2008. When they go, it's back to the Sensor knockoff blades I get at Wal-Mart.
BTW, I like gel shaving cream, but I may get a shower mirror and soap to see if shaving in the warm water is better for me.
Yes, I'm cheap!

disposables

Refuse to use them. Multiple blades are nice, but I've pretty
much regressed to using single-blade injector and then use it
for months at a time. MikeS want to have a contest on cheap?

I used to buy the double-blades when they were on sale for $.50
or less. Once the price went over that, I pretty much gave up
on them and their follow-ons unless I had a coupon of some sort.

And I feel "better" about using single blades environmental-wise.

I hate to shave. I usually only do it when I have to go to work. I think it's a curse on mankind.
A long time ago, I used to use those "Good News" disposable razors. They used to work good, then they raised the price on them and the quality went down hill.
I use a Gillette Mach 3. It can even mow down a 3 day growth in nothing flat. I use "Edge" as a shaving cream. IMO, nothing works as good as a gel.
One of the worst disposables are those Bic disposables. It seems most hotels keep a stock of those devils on hand for guests who have forgotten their razors, or whose razors get broken in transit. They will leave your face red from razor burn all day.
The absolute worst are any Wilkinson-Sword product. I tried one once and it almost took my face off!

Whirlcool:

You have voiced my sentiments nearly exaclty.

It is said by women that the sexiest thing to them is a man shaving his face. Makes sense as this is a male-only ritual.

Well, usually. My auntie Bessie, now that is another matter.
Did you hear? Christina Onassis was de-planing her family's private jet and an observer said something like "Oh darling. what a beautiful mink coat you have on!" Mink coat? I'm in a strapless gown.

I shave every other day.
Pre-wash with Neutrogena, Edge gel, Bic razor for sensitive skin, and store brand Witch Hazel for aftershave.
I shave in the shower as the last thing I do. After spending time under the hot water, it is very easy to get a great shave without bleeding to death. If I shave at the sink after a shower, I don't know why, but I end up cutting myself and bleeding profusely. As if every hair on my neck toughens up to the consistancy of steel wire in the time it takes to dry off and get to the sink.

Electric for me

I have a reasonably light beard, so I'm electric all the way. Start with a light coating of shaving talc, then pull out the vintage Sunbeam Shavemaster and go to town.

Dave, who took the picture? And stop squeezing the toothpaste in the middle of the tube! ;)

I use the Gillette Sensor. I date the cartridge holder at the time I remove each one and usually get 2 months or so out of each cartridge. I have awful skin for shaving, so I shave at night. That way I don't have to face it in the morning. I apply nice rich hair conditioner to my dry face and rub it in for a little while. Then I rinse with warm water and apply Aramis Lab Series A+ Shave Cream out of the jar. The secret to this stuff is that it contains Benzocaine and it's not soapy. It keeps my face from responding to pain and getting all red and irritated, or at least any redder. When I finish, I rinse first with warm water and then with cold to close the pores; remember Joan Crawford's early morning ritual at the start of Mommy Dearest with the steaming water and the ice cubes before she left home in the darkness of early morning for the studio?

I have been thinking about trying that Fusion Power Razor, but when it was on sale with a rebate and I had a coupon, Wrong Aid was out of them and the rebate expired before the next shipment was due in. I can wait. I have lots of Sensor cartridges that I bought on sale a long time ago.
