DIY Kitchen Crashers

Was watching an episode last night of Kitchen Crashers, never had seen this program before. There were redoing a worn out 80's kitchen and making it into a 50-60's kitchen. Now that was different. Though of turquois dude since this was the main color for the walls and accessories. It was in vegas and 2 guys owned the house. Great final finished production. What really got me is when the designer stated that white, clean line appliances are now the new stainless steel. Finally we are going to be over this sterile looking environment, along with constant cleaning of fingerprints. I was waiting dearly for this to happen.

I've noticed a couple of people who have cooking channels on YouTube have their kitchens now with all white kitchen appliances and made me wonder if that was going to be a real change or not.

Both white and stainless steel are classics. I can live with either one, but didn't the move away from white occur in part because it was considered too sterile-looking? The only reason my kitchen is fully stainless is because that was often the only choice in several brands' top-of-the-line appliances.  Stainless seems to be loosening its iron grip, lately.  Gray and white are sometimes available TOL.

 

I purchased slate gray laundry appliances but would probably not carry that into the kitchen.

 

As long as everything (counters, etc.) isn't stainless, I don't see three stainless appliances making a kitchen horribly sterile.  Upkeep is a little more intensive, but even that was made easier with those Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes.  And I don't have kids, which drastically reduces the amount of finger/hand prints. 

 

The new Frigidaire range is smudge-resistant, which also helps.  It isn't that heavy, fake plastic coating that manufacturers tried a few years ago.  This looks and feels exactly like the other appliances, but you can touch it without leaving a calling card.

White has always been in fashion IMO.  Stainless steel may be trendy, but it's nothing new. 

 

I've admired stainless ever since I came across an early '60s stainless Coldspot with bottom freezer at a thrift store back in the late '70s.   It struck me as a more business-like appearance than plain white, and certainly more than any pastel color option.  If I'd had a place for it, I would have bought it.

 

Stainless gets a bad rap from a lot of people, but not me.  Currently, we have a TOL stainless SxS fridge along with a stainless-front "professional" range and a stainless dishwasher.  Our kitchen is almost 90 years old with original cabinetry and dreadful, beyond tired DIY 1970 white tile countertops.  It needed all the help it could get to look like a functional working kitchen, and white wasn't going to cut it.

Almond Appliances

I can't find a reference right now, but the story I've always heard is that the first large order of almond appliances was a custom order by a developer (who didn't like white and thought it was sterile looking) for Lafayette Park in Detroit which was a large scale development by Mies van der Rohe. I suspect it may have been Amana, since they provided the custom under window concealed AC units for him (at least in some of his high-rise apartment projects).

I've always liked white, but then my house came that way even though stainless was "in" at the time. I guess the Silvermans who built the house wanted a white kosher kitchen. A good friend bought a home near me on a golf course in a swanky country club. The kitchen had every Viking built-in appliance you could think of...all stainless. She has no children, but the appliances couldn't have looked worse if kids finger painted on them with Crisco. It made me nervous just to look at them. She used a special cleaner for stainless which made them look "greased."

 

I know very well if I were to sell this house the first thing buyers would say is "oh dear, no stainless!" The laminate counter tops would be second.

 

I can show movies on my refrigeration appliances too, nothing stronger than PG 13 of course...
