I was watching the space shuttle launch (beautifully awesome and glitch-free, by the way) at UStream.tv, and someone on the chat board mentioned that DJ AM was found dead, today, in NYC.

He was an amazingly gifted DJ, and those not familiar with his work may remember him as the other survivor (along with Travis Barker of Blink 182) of a small jet crash last September.

He has been working on a TV show about addiction for the past few months, which was to be broadcast this fall.

It is very sad that he survived that plane crash only to succumb to something like this. I did read somewhere he may have been depressed trying to wean himself from pain medication he had been taking due to the crash. I was so happy he and Travis made it ok, and shocked by his passing.

Hmmmm, crack pipe, prescription bottles all over his apartment, hippity hop connection. All the makings of a disaster.

Was he big on the gansta rap scene as well?

RIP. Maybe he should have gone into rehab instead of trying to withdraw himself, especially since rehab is so fashionable these days.

No, he wasn't a gangsta at all. His style was mash-up, not hip-hop. His DJ-ing was joyous and very inventive. Think party/rave instead of rap. In fact, his career took off after Melissa Etheridge had him DJ her birthday party years ago.

He had been clean for years (9-10, maybe) and by all accounts was a very caring, intelligent, generous guy.

His friends are now saying he had been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder since the plane crash, and some of the posts at his website would confirm that. Then there was the physical pain from his injuries. He'd also just broken up with his girlfriend, so all that could have led him back to the crack pipe.

I have a friend who is a recovering crack addict, and she says it's the most difficult addiction to shake. She's been (mostly) clean for three years and still has a constant physical and emotional craving for it. It's a horrible, horrible drug.

He was a big baseball fan, and just last weekend got to throw the first pitch at a Mets game.

And the other info from this link...

Some people think that he was on medication for his PTS problem as a result of his plane crash. BTW, the plane crashed due to several tires blowing out a few knots before take off. There wasn't enough runway left to stop, so the pilot HAD to take off, but the tires and landing gear caught fire making flight impossible.

He was in Crazy Town briefly ('99-2000, I believe), but they were a lightweight rap-rock outfit, and he had already left the band by the time they had their one hit, "Butterfly". His spinning skills since that time have grown and changed considerably.
