Hi everyone, I hope that you're all having a good Christmas. Just looking to see if any of you remember seeing a 15 minute laundry related programme as part of BBC Water Week in 1998? It was called Washday Blues -A Kitchen Sink Drama. It was a spoof/comedy short and featured Morwenna Banks as a 1950's housewife who wanted a washing machine. A few old adverts included in it too. I had it on a recording for years but it got thrown away when I moved. I'm always hopeful that it will appear on YouTube but it never has. It feels like it's disappeared and I'm the only person to remember it lol. I was only 12 when it aired but heavily into washers by then 🙂 There's a record of it online and according to TV listings it aired on BBC 2 at 21:45, Tuesday 24th March 1998.

Anyway, I can still remember it vividly and wondered if any of my fellow enthusiasts also saw it. Happy New Year everyone!

Unfortunately I have no recollection of that programme at all, sounds like it was very interesting. But the good thing is, through the work of UK members, you could actually relive the programme for real as there are many machine from the 1950s which have been collected and restored to full working order. We even have the vintage powders to go with them

Hi Al, thanks for the reply, it was an interesting programme and in those pre YouTube days seeing those ads was great 🙂

I'm fortunate to own a few vintage machines, my pride and joy being my wringerless Countess which seems to be rare and is pristine. I've posted a link to my earlier thread below so that you can see some of the machines I have. I've since parted with my Supertwin and Hotpoint top loader (needed space) but have plenty to play with lol. This seems a very friendly group and I love seeing the fantastic machines others have in their collection, great to see them restored to their former glory.

Hi Kevin,
I was intrigued by your posting and the the short programme you refer to, i am really into researching vintage information on washing machines, whether that be paper based literature or tv related matter and have amassed quite a collection, unfortunately not this programme.
I have been speaking to a good contact at the BBC and i think i may have tracked down the programme, it needs converting to DVD from either VHS or Betamax but there maybe light at the end of the tunnel :) i will update you soon.

Thanks for your message, that sounds really positive :) I still kick myself for not keeping the copy that I had recorded! I thought that it might generate a bit of interest amongst members, so much history is unearthed here and on YouTube it's amazing really and a real treat for those into washers like us.
