From more than one source, learned phosphates in laundry detergents can cause fading/colour loss in non white items such as lights and darks. Haven't noticed it myself when using STPP, but really only use water softener on whites and lights.

I think that the substitute of phosphates, zeolite, can cause white residues on coloured clothes, because it's not solubile in water.
