When I go to pick up an old washer or dryer, people get this eureka like look accompanied by an incredulous smile and inevitably wind up asking, "So do you collect these things or something"? I smile and say "well yeah sorta". All the time thinking of you guys and your serious wall to wall killer collections. I am modest by comparision due to availability and the price some of these machines are commanding now. This is not a cheap hobby.

Do you guys ever get this?

OF COURSE!

This is the initiation into Vintage Appliances - You eventually become a pro at handling these non believers. And once you show them you're passionate - they are also somehow impressed. Robert once recommended I take a few pics with me to show of other machines and people then realize their beauty.

Try that next time you get "the LOOK"...

LOL, I'm a bit apprehensive now when plumbers or sprinkler repair or whatever needs to get into my garage. The typical question is whether I work on appliances as a part-time business. The sprinkler/yard guy last week showed a bit of passing interest when I pointed out my 1950 Frigidaire, the Maytag 906s, and the Calypso as examples of collectibles.

Some strategies:

If I get the "look" from moronics when I express an interest in a washer or a dryer and want to yank their unimaginative chains, I will say, depending on mood and/or situation:

1. I'm a chef (truth)and I want to use the machine as a heavy duty salad spinner at work for cleaning cases of lettuce(a bold faced lie although I have a friend whose mother used to use her mini-basket for that exact purpose).

2. I'm a potter and I'm going to use it for annealing raku ware.

3. How do YOU get rid of dead hamsters?

4. I need it to churn pulp for papermaking(I've seen this done).

5. We're doing a play and it will make a great prop.

6. I belong to an internet group of adults who are interested in vintage washing machines and I want this for my collection (gets a laugh every time).

Maybe Caught Somebody's Interest

As I was purchasing some laundry additives at Hy-Vee one day, I told the store person helping me about our Web site and she made note of it. Hopefully, she would still take interest and check us out. Although I myself do not have the room, the funds, or the means to collect vintage washers, the next best thing is to collect audios and videos, which I most thoroughly enjoy. Too bad there is yet to be a way for smelling those classic laundry detergent scents through my computer. *grins*--Laundry Shark
