With that in mind, when I drag the wash out of the washer and dump it in the dryer, should I shake it all out first or just dump it in?

It reduces wrinkling, and it allows the heat to be more quickly used....at least that's MY experience.

sometimes I just toss it in.....but as Lawrence said, it usually is best to shake them out first, it fluffs and seperates them, and untwist items for best wrinkle free results...

Everything gets a shake before I tumble dry or line dry.

Towels and sheets particularly seem to benefit.

I like Eugenes approach, I only untie and shake large or wrinkle sensitive items, other wise if you have a decent at least 7 cubic foot dryer it makes no difference at all in the final results.

Unless something is tangled, I just grab as much as possible out of the washer and chuck it in the dryer. I think tumbling for an hour or more should straighten things out, and it usually does

I shake and chuck as needed/not. I do unsnarl sheets in the dryer at least halfway through.

We're shakers here. It only takes a minute or two and the clothing and such comes out without many wrinkles in them. Plus I think the dryer dries the clothes a few minutes faster.

The Duet Sport kind of gently does this at the end of each cycle, so we don't usually do it. Of course even if it didn't, I probably wouldn't... who am I trying to kid!!! I used to peel the stuff away from the drum of the TL and throw it in the dryer sans shake.

Other things get shaken at least twice.

I do it always before I tumble dry or line dry.

I don't when using the dryer, but do it when line drying.  I figure that's what the dryer is supposed to do.

Depends on the Machine, I Should Think:

Back in the Dark Ages, when I had an Evil Em - erm, Whirly - DD pair, I used to have to shake and shake and shake, because stuff came out of that miserable washer tangled into ropes. Then, halfway through drying, I'd have to detangle again.

Now, with Maytags, I haven't given that process a thought in quite some time. No excessive washer tangling, no tangling in the dryer at all.

I only shake / untangle larger items that are tangled, balled up or otherwise twisted into a "rope".  

 

Other than that, I just toss everything in the dryer as it comes out of the washer.   I don't see the need to "fluff" the items, since they get "fluffed" as they tumble around in the dryer.

With most standard -heavy loads, I do the same as most here - shake, loosen and go. I am lazy occasionally, when a few items are washed..and just transfer over, with minimal shaking.

I have found no difference

In shake or no shake.   As long as the washer and or dryer are not overloaded there should be no problem.

I have an automatic washer...

...an automatic dryer and, since the tail-end of the San Andreas fault runs directly under my laundry room, an automatic shaker...and I got the cracks in my tile floor to prove it.
