hello washer friends, I have been doing some research on the first hoover mini wringer washer. and as I understand it Gibson/monitor copied their design. does anyone have one of the first ones that I could see? thanks Bill

Hello Bill, the first Hoover single tub was produced in 1947 in a brand new state of the art washing machine factory in Merthyr Tidfyl, South Wales in the UK. The story goes that Gorge Colston the MD of The UK Perivale HQ was on a Hoover annual meet and festival and saw the designs for this machine, he then brought it to the UK, government funding was available for urban regeneration due to the mines closing and so a new washing machine factory was built!!

The factory nestles on the "Heads of the Valleys" road which runs through the main valleys of South Wales.

And heres the washer..

A simple pressed aluminium tub on a frame with outer cabinet, a Hoover brushless motor powers the famous Hoover Pulsator via a belt, doesnt even have a switch, you simply plug in and switch on at the wall to start..

The shiny metal top doubles as a worktop to catch the clothes coming out of the hand wringer, which is swung down with a simple catch and stored inside the washtub when finished.

Simply fill with a gallon of hot water and add soap!!

Washing

Here you see the inside of the washtub, the pulsator which is made of bakelite, the first models where metal..notice the markings for the fill line and the tiny hole where the water emptys, this acts as a venturi and because of the size of washtub to hole it emptys rather quickly with pressure!!

Water and soap added, switch on and feed the clothes in..

It usually only takes around 4 minutes for cottons, less for delicate fabrics, then switch off and hand feed through the wringer having placed the lid on the back to catch the clothes..

When washing is finished you can fill the tub with clean water for subsequent rinsing, although I never actually ever saw that happen, usually the laundry was rinsed in the sink..to empty the tub simply lower the pipe into a bucket or drain, no electric pump..

Nearly empty, you can see the little drain hole sucking the water through..

All empty, swish round with a cloth to dry, drop the wringer down, put on the lid and place back under the draining board until washday!!
