Quiet Please, There´s a Lady on Stage
Mr. Tom Daschel gave up the ghost today, and withdrew his name for consideration in the Obama cabinet over the continuing revelations reagarding his failure to pay certain taxes. This came as another Obama choice,Nancy Killefer withdrew her name from consideration over a tax lien placed on her home in 2005, over failure to pay taxes. All of this comes as we now have a Treasury Secretary who also apparently played fast and loose when it came to his taxes.

Just what is going on in Washington? Conventional wisdom says there is no such thing as one rat in a barn, if you find one, there are others lurking about. Maybe we need to have the entire Senate and Congress audited?

I mean be fair, its not like these persons are sitting at home struggling to do their taxes, or hire their wife's second cousin, twice removed. These people have the funds to hire some of the most expert tax advisors and professionals available.

They're all crooked, and crooks, in one way or another. As I've always said, pollyticians live on an entirely different plane of existence from the rest of us, whereby the rules they pass to control the common-man constituents don't apply to themselves, or are willfully disregarded. The effects of their policies and gooverning as well have very little bearing on themselves.

The phrase "Crooked as a Politician" comes to mind.....

Gee I wonder where THAT came from?! hehehehe...

Too true Dadoes - and you know what, it's mostly the same all over the world. Now, to make a point in case, take poor little Mike Phelps. He gets snapped sucking on a bong and his world gets ripped to pieces. Imagine if he'd also been snapped sucking on something more substantial - imagine the scandal of it all. Then take some skanky ole' millionaire ho like Paris, who gets paid thousands to slut and party on who knows what with who knows whom?

Then, of course and I can't resist, there is that boob of an ex-president. Who, against all available evidence and expert advice, goes ahead and declares war on Iraq. This idiot and his cabinet of twats is directly responsible for the unnecessary deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people. Yet, some are already saying that history will not judge him too harshly. I say he deserves to be nailed to a wall with the rest of his f**ked up family, who are nothing more than opportunistic pustules on the face of humanity.

Of course Bush sleeps well at night, in his twisted little head everything he did was righteous. He is no better than Bin Laden, whom, btw, he was never keen to capture. That towel-headed moron is a member of one of the world's richest families, who are personal acquaintances of the Bushs. Capturing and parading Bin Laden would have been very bad for business. But, they are rich and powerful and, thus, to be excused.

As long as we keep worshipping wealth and material possessions over facts, intelligence, logical and humanistic/humanitarian thinking, nothing will change. We put these people on pedestals and bend over for them as we all shout our collective 'baaahs', like the lazy mindless sheep that is 90% of humanity. I still recall the overwhelming vitriole and hostility that was dished out to all those who dared to think and question Bush's policies.

So, why should it come as a surprise that politicians don't pay their share of taxes? Rant over.

Cheers

I feel bad for Mike Phelps, and i am still proud of him. I bet the photographer that snapped the pic of Mike just stopped in... to use the phone.....right?

You tell 'em Rapunzel!

I think part of the problem is that the tax system is so complex it is very hard for someone honorable, much less a politician, to do things perfectly right.

To be fair, we saw republicans with the same sorts of problems over the last eight years, so it should be no surprise that democrats have these problems, too.

Of course, compared to jerks in the financial industry who don't even have to account (and, according to them, can't) for the $350 billion of our tax dollars they were given by shrub...this isn't even a drop in the bucket.

AW Valildates Limbaugh Message

Did you guys catch this Limbaugh piece:
“Well folks, I told you this would happen. The liberal Democrats who would be all over a Republican president will give Obama a pass and expect everyone else to look the other way. There is a discussion thread on a website called Automatic Washer dot org that is doing just that over the problem with some of Obama’s appointments. These gentlemen, who in other contexts have no qualms about airing laundry, haven’t even mentioned Obama’s name in connection with this presidential snafu. Why, if this were a Republican president there would have been twenty-five posts of name calling and ridicule. I told you, folks. I told you.”

'These gentlemen haven’t even mentioned Obama’s name&#39

'Obama!' There now, I've mentioned his name. Hope you feel better rocketwarior. So, what do you suggest? Should Obama resign on the spot? Why don't we take Bushie to court for war crimes and human rights abuses, whilst we are at it?

Panthera made a good point. Then again, most pollies can afford the best possible tax advice and, surely, 150ks in back taxes and interest can't be that hard to miss. Unless, of course, they have a gambling, drug and/or alcohol problem.

I think Al Franken got it right...

"Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot"

LOL.

Seriously, what about all the American corporations that evade taxes by shifting their headquarters overseas to tax havens like the Cayman Islands? How much in taxes does our nation lose to scams like that?

Also, it's interesting to see the neocons get all up in arms about a Democrat's individual tax foibles - but they rail against paying ANY taxes themselves. What's up with that?

'what about American corporations shifting headquarters

Too right, but politicians aren't incorporated. They are on the public payroll and, as role models with significant influence on all of our lives, need to put their money where their mouths are - and I am refering to pollies of all persuasions. The government could do plenty about tax evading corporations if they really wanted to.

Actually, I recall reading last year that some Dems in Congress were making noise about the taxes lost due to offshore tax havens - both for corporations and private individuals.

I'm kind of amazed that we allow such arrangements in the first place. What possible benefit could accrue to America by allowing its citizens and its corporations to evade taxes by shifting their HQ's on paper to an offshore tax haven?

Both of America's major political parties are bought and paid for by multinational corporations, so questions like yours are self-explanatory. These corporations have no allegiance to or concern for the American people. They'd sell your mother down the river for a nickel, and then sleep like babies afterwards. Every time you walk into a Walmart or Target is another nail in America's coffin.

Do we have a consensus?

We are agreed, then, that there should be no critical discussion of Obama's performance? We give him a pass and squelch counterpoint?

P.S. Sudsmaster - satire, my friend, satire.

We can agree that George W. Bush was an unqualified catastrophe for America, and that it's going to take us many years to repair the damage.

You said it, Rapunzel

This actually might be irony - but as I recall, this thread had to do with the recent news that a certain president's recent appointment nominee's turned out to be problems. But, by way of distraction and to squelch adverse comment, you decided to attack a former president. Kind of a "nyah, nyah, nyah, but what about......" thing. I'm just saying the topic was a current president's appointments. Your approach is what puts wind beneath Limbaugh's wings.

obama, bush, mcain, and whoever else, are crooks one way or another and at our expense!!! NOTHING surprises me with politicians and the many other members that therein make up the rest of the malignant extension of political leaders.

PERIOD

the worst=BUSH

Obama's Mistakes

Fortunately, I suspect that the President has people close to him that are, in fact, critical. Otherwise the isolation would be deadly.

Now, guys, President Obama has publicly stated he made mistakes with these nominees and that pursuing their appointment was inconsitent with his promise to change Washington. He is a good man for refusing to accept the pass y'all were offering him and, instead, fess up to having made a mistake.

Neocons - rail against paying ANY taxes themselves

This quote from above is amusing in that I believe you are talking about the people who do pay the vast bulk of the taxes and provide goods and services that provide employment and more tax revenue. I know full well that however much I might "rail" about my tax obligation, I will, as I have for 30 years, pay more taxes than anyone else on my block.

And if you are in to global humanity, more humans have been pulled out of poverty by the global economic factors y'all are railing against than any aid packages.
