When I was little, Mom used this fabric softener called Rain Barrel. I remember how fresh and clean it smelled...Ive wondered what happened to it. Does anyone here ever recall their mom, grandma, or aunts using it?
I remember it well. It was supposed to be put into the wash cycle along with your detergent.I believe it was a Colgate/Palmolive product. It came out around 1971 close to the horible dryer spray softener called "Cling Free".I can't even fathem how many dryers that crap ruined by causing the rear of the drum in the dryer to rust. The Rain Barrel would, from mixing with the detergent, cause a severe wax gunk build up in the walls of the outer tub. That would gum up and black spots would deposit on clothes. So many customers would see that and automaticaly assume it was an oil leek from their washer's trans.and wind up replacing a perfectly well running machine.
Yeah? I didnt know that..Mom always put it in the rinse water...never with the detergent...I guess thats why our washer never got a build up......that is really wild
Rain Barrel was actually made by SC Johnson (aka Johnson Wax). My mother used it too; it actually worked better in the rinse cycle than in the wash. (If I recall, "Consumer Reports" rated it highly for rinse use, but not when added to the wash.) Nice fragrance, if I recall.
