Hey guys, thought I'd post some pics of the Flair Ben and I cleaned up tonight. We spotted it this weekend at a local store ready for the recycler pickup...so I took my lunch hour and went over to rescue it.

I love those stoves, have never seen one in real life. They look so sharp.. I'd imagine they're a bit of a bugger to clean though with all those grease catching corners.

Love the stove Cory! You guys find the best stuff. My aunt had the coppertone Flair range. I saw her last month and asked her about it. She said the controls stopped working correctly,so she bought a new GE several years ago.

Congratulations!

So is it a Custom Deluxe or Custom Imperial? I have an Imperial, but I wish it were a deluxe - those specialty burners are a pain.

Flairs. There's just something about them.

Here's another version

I was looking at one of these on eBay last night. The link is below. My friend's sister-in-law has a GE very similar to this and she wants me to take it out of her basement. It's white and has the same configuration as the one I linked even though they're different makers. It's in perfect working order and it about the coolest thing I've ever seen. It comes with a matching table/counter to place it on, has all original paperwork and even some pans and things that came with it. Problem is, I just don't know what to offer her for it.

YAY Cory and Ben!

Love the coppertone Flair! It looks great! If you find yourselves with a few "extra" ranges, please feel free to send one to Texas! ;-)

A matching coppertone fridge would be awesome! Have fun!

Custom Imperial

Hey Guys,

This was an unexpected find! I've never seen this layout on a Flair, with the burner controls on the right - so I presume it is towards the last of the run for the Flairs? I think the model was something like an RCIJ-635. She still needs some cleaning, and we haven't tested the burners. I would suspect the heat minder is probably out, but hopefully the rest of the range is in working order. It was recently taken out of a home, and I think it was taken out working. There was a copertone mid sixties Kenmore dryer close by, and have a feeling the came from the same home. I said to Cory, "Imagine the house this came out of!"

There is a white one on the bay I want right now... hum. How hard are these things to work on?

Ben

Cory and Ben--man, you two find the coolest stuff! How many houses between you are you going to have to have to keep all this cool stuff?

Cory, did you make Ben do the cleaning? ;)

I despair of ever having a vintage range. Can usually find electric ones, but my place uses gas.

Oh, and guys, if you ever find yourselves with extra ranges like Venus says, do not, I repeat, DO NOT send them to Texas! Nobody'll ever see 'em again. (How's that CI coming, Venus honey?)

veg

Veg,

When we drag things home, I'm ALWAYS there to help clean, even if it is through really NASTY greese! We cleaned up the glass, knobs and glass lens last night to show it off. The rest will come with time.

Now, if Cory only had a bigger basement (if it isn't already big enough), or would build a bigger garage, or if I even bought a place besides my apt....

Ben

Hey you Veg! You wanna piece of me?

Veg:

I'm gonna smack ya! LOL I am painting (between posts, of course) the ceiling in the den. Soon, the kitchen will follow!
The goal is to have the CI ready for the big bird in November! It will be seen again!

One more word and I'll stuff you instead! ;-)

Venus - not to be messed with because I've got PMS and a paintbrush!

PS I've attached a pic, just in case you forgot what she looked like. ;-)

WOW!

The flair is cool, and I love the coppertone color!
Venus: I am laughing at your post so much my co-workers are wondering what I am doing!
That is one beautiful stove as well!

Awesome find!

You guys have done a great job already making it look new again!! I know what kind of job that is too. I have got to see one of those in person some day.

It is great all the nice finds people have had lately, and to know these items are going to be saved, fixed and used!

Very nice!

"J" line of ranges would be 1965. Frigidaire started the changeover to letter designation for model year with cooking first, laundry changed over with the "K" line, 1966. Several revisions of these happened by this model - most apparent is the control arrangement, clock and the pattern on the oven door glass. I would be surprised if the Heat Minder burner doesn't work, depending on the type it is. Does this have a "Speed Heat" burner on the left front? Most likely, that is where a problem will be with Frigidaire burners, the switches were trouble-prone.

A few weeks ago, there were two 30" Flairs in the same house, one in the basement. One was white, the other coppertone, both with the base cabinets attached. They were asking $200 each for them, I got them down to $35 the last day of the sale and then decided to let it go, I have no room for more!!

Venus,
What type of range is that? Any close ups of the control panel? What is that tv like area on the right hand side? I like it!!

Thanks guys!

For your kind words!

Greg - Thanks for the report! I was curious what year it was, and figured it was a later model, judging by the style and control panel change. What was the last year for the Flair? This unit does have the Speed Heat burner, so if its out, I'll consider her done. I would imagine parts are pretty slim, if you can find 'em.

Now here is what I'm wondering. I've noticed that some models have blower vents, and some do not. There was a tag on the inside of the blower housing that made me think that it was an accessory to the range. If one were to find a unit without the blower, is it possible to add one if needed? I wasn't sure if they were sold as complete units, or if it was an add on during the installation?

Speed Heat fix

My speed heat burner went out, and I figured it was goners until I happened to find its fuse, which is brilliantly positioned above the ovens in the rear left-hand corner. Whatever braniac thought that one up deserves a cookie.

Of course, once I got the speed heat up and running, the heat-minder broke, and I still haven't figured that one out.

There is also a fuse behind the rear right-hand burner. I think it controls the convenience outlet, but since mine doesn't work, I can't say for certain.

As far as the exhaust vent goes, I have one, but I have never hooked it up. The new house affords me that opportunity, however, so I may just have to try it.

For what it's worth, I do have some information on my website about the flair. you can check it out if you like.

She is the

Scott:

That is an RCI-59 aka a 1959 Frigidaire Custom Imperial Range. The area on the right hand side is the Speed Heat/Heat Minder display and control. Here are a few more pics for your perusal. Boy, Frigidaire used to make some terrific and innovative products; like Cory's Flair and this range. What a shame they've fallen to such mediocrity.

Veg:

That pitter-patter I hear better be your Nike-clad feet! I am right behind you with one of my spare agitators!

Venus - add "teenager" to list of why I shouldn't be messed with!

P.S. Jeff: I guess I'd better behave or Air-Way Charlie will have me abducted and sent to his Joan Crawford Finishing School. YIKES :-0

Question

Dalangdon, it appears that your Flair has two separate oven compartments but the manual appears to show one. Was this available in two configurations?

I retract the question

I just called the person who owns the "GE" and it's not. She's got a coppertone GE Fridge she wants to get rid of as well, and maybe that's why I had it in my head that it was a GE. She has a Frigidaire Custom Imperial Flair in White, the two oven configuration, in near mint conditon, with the counter, the extras, the original paperwork, the whole sha-bang, and it all works. Now I don't need an oven per say, but I planned on building a bar/lounge in my basement at some point in the future, and this flair is so cool, I was considering working it into the bar.

She won't give me a price on what she wants for it but she wants to sell. She's waiting for me to make an offer.

Ladies and Gentlemen of dishwasher.org, what would be a fair price to offer her for this? I may give her this link to show that I consulted with the experts, so make sure your recommendations are nice and low and within my means. Thanks.

Results to P# 87001 should be very interesting!!!!

Mike - I find my self in a similar situation; though a washing
drying unit on "the floor" of a repair and sell biz.
As it relates to the "Flair" they were around for quite a few
years with not extensive changes. About six years ago, in
the Grass Valley daily rag I encounterd one for $40 with a home made knotty pine base cabinet. It had been originally purchased by the Mother of the seller in 1961. It was less than pristine, but every bit as usable as what I had in place @ the time. (I still have it, nis; pity that AW.O didn't
secure the "Transporter" when Captain Kirk & the rest of the original crew retired!) I have seen Flairs w/optional base cab
and vent for as low as $175 and less when the whole works aren't included. My personal take on acquisition in general is that if one waits long enough an item becomes available at
a price that can be lived with. If this seller really wants to sell her Flair she will say how much she wants, or at least, hopes to get for it. If she wont come that far, let her find her perfect buyer. I think I have seen referals to Ebay on AW.O where more than $1000 has been expected for one.

The market has fallen, flair-wise.

They don't seem to be selling like they were. We had one on craigslist - a real beauty too - that has been reduced and reduced, yet no one will buy.

I'd say offer her $100, if that's what you can afford. It would cost that much to haul it away.

Thanks Venus!

Can't wait to see that operational!

I would love to pick up that Flair in Pa too, but no where to put it for now.. time to do some garage cleaning!

Ben, the vent was an option and can be removed and placed on another 30" Flair if desired.

Pricing. A vintage gas range, depending on brand and model will always bring more than an electric unless it's very rare or unusual. I've been watching ebay ranges (bethann is a great "heads up" hunter too!) and a vintage Okeefe and Merritt, Chambers, Tappan, etc. command the highest prices - sometimes approaching $1000. I've seen a few Flairs behind Lowes, at sales, etc. and most people have trouble giving them away let alone fetching a hefty price for them. I saw a pink Westinghouse range on ebay that went for a little more than $500, but that is rare and probably can be mostly attributed to the color.

I'm currently finishing a restore job on a 1950 Maytag Dutch Oven gas range. I found two of them, one in Kansas City (craigslist) and another was on ebay from Texas. I combined the best of the two units into one (with a big box of spares left over) and have had a great time learning about them and seeing how things work. Here is a picture of the two ranges before work began. The kettle in the range on the right isn't the OEM part, that was missing and I'm still looking for the original so this one will have to do for now...
