Let's see if this passes...

I would be thrilled to see this pass, but I have a gut feeling it won't. If this bill cannot pass in Congress with huge Democrat majorites, it never will. Sadly, there are many bigoted Democrats who want to squash this.

I really hope I am wrong though..

We'll wear them down eventually by sheer determination. Fifty years from now, people will look back and marvel at our ability to keep fighting in the face of continual setbacks.

We're the people who, in the 1930's-1940's, fought a seemingly endless series of battles for racial equality; battles which, legally at least, would eventually bear fruit in the 1950's and early '60s. Not to mention the gender equality issues of roughly the same time period.

Maybe it IS amazing the country didn't implode in the mid-to-late 1960's. A lot of long-held prejudices/injustices in several major societal spheres were battling to be liberated almost simultaneously.

Can you imagine what a seismic shift it was for your average bigoted, sexist person? Just as they do now, they brayed then about the end of the "real America" and "their personal freedoms" and their "God-given rights" and blah-blah-blah. I can remember seeing red-faced, ineloquent people on TV bellowing that it was an infringement on their rights and freedoms to have to sit in the same restaurant with blacks.

As for the fight for marriage equality, it's a very frustrating process when you're the generation living through it, but it's also oddly compelling to witness the hatred and bile and fear rise to the surface in the people who want so badly to outmoded prejudices, while at the same time knowing they'll eventually be on the losing side.

Keep pushing, kids. Two steps forward and one step back. Eventually, we win.
