First, I would like to apologize to mr.coppertone and others who are fans of the coppertone color.

I went to an estate sale several weeks ago after my GE Americana died, and there was a coppertone GE refrigerator with the swing out shelves and bottom freezer. I bought it and repainted it to match the turquoise in my kitchen. We didn't do the best job with the paint, so we will try again in the spring when the weather is more stable and conducive to painting.

I miss the Americana terribly, and the plan is to ship it off somewhere to get it fixed. In the meantime, hopefully this little guy will last.

Here are before and after shots. Please ignore the wall on the right in the after shot as we have to replace a section of drywall. The Americana covered up the space so we actually forgot about it.

Looks nice.  Did you have the proper GE color mixed or did you use the SW color you identified as the closest match?

Turquoise GE Refrigerator

It does look great in Turquoise, and I am a big fan of shaded copper-tone, but GEs CT color was never as attractive as WP-KMs because the contrast between the light and darker areas was too pronounced to look good.

 

Westinghouse also had this problem, as did Maytag, but I shouldn't say anything bad about Maytag because a lot of people will call me awful names again, LOL

Lawrence, we used the "Cooled Blue" SW color in gloss enamel through a paint sprayer. Unfortunately, it came out more satin than gloss, so we probably will go with an auto paint in the future. SW does have an auto paint store, but they don't use the same colors as their house paints. They could do a custom off of the paint swatch, but they also have a turquoise that is extremely close. We didn't contact a body shop about getting the Dupont color formula, but I will do that when we decide to do this again.

John, I also like the Coppertone, but as everyone knows, turquoise is my favorite. The house this came from was a gorgeous MCM in a highly desirable subdivision and is probably going to sell close to 1M due to it being on a 2 acre lot. Hopefully it won't get bulldozed, but at the least, I'm sure the new buyer would have scrapped the appliances. At least that's what I'm telling myself to make me feel better about repainting--lol!

I like coppertone best because that is the best color for my kitchen. In fact, im looking for a larger coppertone refrigerator. For your kitchen, the blue looks nice.

I think I am one of the few who likes that shade of Coppertone...

 

That is certainly a color (well, next to the turquoise, also a favorite of mine) that I would pick, no matter the brand...

Although I'm not a fan of the harvest color palette, coppertone and poppy are my favorites. Wow!

Somewhat tangentially, what are the measurements of the GE Americana? And just how much of an energy hog is an Americana? Kelly told me years ago that it would be the perfect thing for my kitchen... I don't know if I could sell it to my husband, but every time I see one (a picture) I become more convinced that I "need" one...

<span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;">Much nicer in turquoise. I like earth tones but never was a fan of shaded coppertone. I did like that non-shaded brown color that Frigidaire used. I also liked that Kelvinator brushed copper/brown color, doors only...do you remember it? It was almost impossible to touch-up. If a customer's fridge was in the shop they had to be extra careful, especially during pickup and return delivery. They were blanket-wrapped. The store had a professional paint department with a huge paint booth and a professional paint guy to match, Leon. He could do shading with an expert hand. Good thing his religion forbid drinking. </span>

Im looking for one that is 33 inches in width and 68 in height. Height can be an inch or two smaller. My coppertone fridge is way smaller than that.

Sarah, the Americana is 6ft tall, 25 inches deep, and about 41 inches wide. Honestly, I wasn't too keen on how it looked in the kitchen originally, but I quickly fell in love with its functionality. We were using a newer Samsung sxs, and before that we had a Hotpoint sxs, so this was the first fridge that we used with the bottom drawer. I *loved* the counter space it provided. My only complaint is that I wish the refrigerated section was bigger. We buy groceries for the whole week, so we still used the Samsung for overflow. If the Americana would have lasted, we would have sold the Samsung, and purchased a small apartment sized fridge as an overflow.

Ken--thanks so much for that website. I didn't look online to see if I could buy the paint from source there.

Oliger--that's the size of the turquoise/coppertone fridge we're using now, so this model would definitely work for you if you find one.

Americana gone by

Sigh. There was a beautiful coppertone one in Huntsville (just a couple of hours from Tuscaloosa) posted on Facebook. It was on for months...

But part of my problem is getting my dear husband on board with vintage.

I remember the Americana in Huntsville. I had actually inquired about it and was more interested in parts vs. the whole thing. I do have another AMericana, a pink one, and that was the only one I had at the time. However, it was missing a shelf and a couple of the containers which the coppertone had. Not long afterwards I found the turquoise, and ended up using some of the gasket on the pink one to salvage the blue one. When we swapped the gaskets, on both fridges the plastic inside the doors was not in the best shape as there were a lot of cracks not visible. We did discuss moving the pink one inside, but that meant having to take the gasket off the blue again and risk further damage to both. So, we decided to go with the small coppertone, and ship the blue to someone in the spring for repair.
