I can't get the glass door shield to stay up on a GE P7 self-cleaning range. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can remedy this? Thank you!

Oh, Dear.

You have a situation that is going to take some work to resolve.

The door shield works on a simple mechanical linkage inside your oven door. The linkage is designed to have a "stop" built into it for the raised position.

Something is going on with that linkage. Either parts are out of alignment, or they're worn, or they're broken.

You will need to disassemble the oven door to see what is going on. The bad news is, this is pretty darn tricky. There are lots of parts inside, and they all have to line up perfectly for the door to reassemble correctly and do its job.

Added to which is, your oven door is hard to remove. Down where the hinges disappear into the oven door, you will see two screws - one for each hinge. You will need to remove those, and then the oven door lifts off the hinges like a modern one does.

When you lift the oven door off, two very strange-looking little spring metal clips will fall out. I can tell you how to get them back into place when you get to the point of reinstalling the door; it won't make sense to you before then.

If parts are broken inside the door, hopefully one of our members here, John combo52, will have what you need.

You're going to have to do some experimenting when you get inside the door, testing the movement of the shield and seeing what might be wrong. I have not had trouble with a shield, so I can't tell you about that part of it - only about the disassembly and reassembly.

Good luck!
