Hey All,
Has anyone seen the movie Dreamgirls? If you did what did you think? It opened this weekend at my theatre here in San Marcos and it isn't doing gangbuster business, if fact some patrons left early before the movie finished, strange for a possible academy award nomination.
In real life, about a year ago, I was fortunate to meet Mary Wilson in person, one of the orginal Supremes. She is truly a remarkable person and gave an outstanding show at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio.
 
I haven't seen it yet, but I plan on it.

I got to meet Mary about two years ago when she was performing at a concert in Branson. She autographed my Supremes poster (the Lincoln Center marquee), and we briefly chatted. She was very warm and friendly, and like you said, her show was outstanding.

I was also elated to hear that Jennifer Hudson dedicated her award to the late Florence Ballard. Buttered Popcorn has always been one of my favorite Supremes songs.
 
I haven't seen Dreamgirls, but I did see Jake Gyllenhall (of Brokeback Mountain fame) do a number from it in full drag when he hosted SNL a week or two ago. Actually, he sang pretty good, but no way he could pass for a woman. Too muscular.

He said it was a thank you to his new fan base... LOL...

Yes, I was touched that Jennifer Hudson dedicated her award, thats class. Many in the industry said that Flo had the strongest voice. Anyone else remember the Supremes?

i like the Supremes very much, esp the pre-Birdsong hits. didja know Florence Ballard FOUNDED the group? she did indeed have the strongest voice, but Gordy thought it too aggressive of a voice for girl-pop. of course Wilson was the pretty one, but Ross offered Gordy something more... tangible than good looks.

Beyonce is (IMO) OVERRATED, and irritates me to no end. she keeps the phony-hair industry chugging. her ass-shaking and banshee-wails leave a lot to be desired. remember the girl Beyonce threw out of her group several years back? she was quite pretty, bet she cramped Beyonces style!

I saw in this weekend

I thought it was great. I too still play the records and also the Village People.

Yep, Diana and Berry Gordy were not exactly kind to Flo, were they?

I remember back in 2000, when Diana decided that she WAS the Supremes, and put together a "reunion" tour that didn't feature the original anybody but her.

People stayed away in such droves that the tour had to be cancelled. This for an act that once could pack any house, anywhere, any time.
 
Last Superbowl my partner and I were helping out at a hotel in Detroit that my best friend managed. We were a host hotel and had Fox Sports staying there and they also ran the limousine dispatch out of the ballroom for the entire event. We ended up getting VIP passes to see Smokey Robinson, it was just so awesome to be able to go into the VIP room and have the buffet with some of Detroits more famous people. We also had the Four Tops walk into the hotel lobby and start singing one night about midnight but unfortunately I didn't get to see them because I had gone to bed...lol. Sorry this doesn't pertain to Dreamgirls but thought it would be interesting to tell.

I LOVE that album. Their version of "Stranger in Paradise" is so haunting and beautiful at the same time.

Also of interest to vacuum collectors, in Mary Wilson's autobiography "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme" she mentions that when she was a young child her adoptive parents had a brand new Eureka vacuum. This would have been the very early 50's.
 
A couple of thoughts....I think the group sounded as good or better after Ross's departure though Jean Terrell didn't have the stage charisma Ross possessed, but she was good. As well, Sherrie Payne had a voice too. Mary was right when she said that as time progressed the sound just kept getting better. To bad Motown felt there could be only one star, and egos and bickering got in the way.
There is a scene in Dreamgirls that is absolutely heart stopping, when Effie turns the corner in a 3rd rate, flea bitten hotel and you see her face.....she strongly resembled Flo. Spinal tap.
You know, it's a shame really how everything turned out concerning the Supremes. Could you imagine a true reunion of all living members of the group on stage singing their hearts out, putting egos aside. I think a time for that has pretty much come and gone. How sad.
I too loved Flo and her spunk.
