Sorry to rant and rave about the drought here in GA.

The weather service continues to post fire theats warnings due to the lack of rain fall this year creating the worst drought in 100 years.

The one thing most people who smoke (I am not knocking smokers) don't realize when a active cigarette butt is thrown from a car window it can start a fire. Every morning on the way to work I see cigarette butts being tossed out everywhere. With all the leaves falling all it would take to start a wild fire is ONE ember from a lit cigarette butt!

Sorry I had to vent!

Thanks!
David

David, many of the wildfires that happen in California are the result of a tossed cigarette butt. You have good cause for concern. Hopefully the media in your area are hammering the message home to smokers about this.

I always use the ash tray and insist my passengers make likewise. Not only does ashing on the bodywork spoil it, but throwing the ends out the window is indeed dangerous in certain areas.

I am VERY annoyed at car manufacturers who decline to include ash trays in their cars as they encourage the unsanitary and in some cases dangerous practice of using the window as the ash tray. Some days I'd like to print this up and put it in my car:

I could not agree more

My late father-in-law was the world's worst to open the driver's side window less than a fraction of an inch to flick off his ashes with an empty ashtray in the dash right beside him. He said "using the astray would dirty up his Olds 88". The ashes use to blow on the people sitting in the back seat normally me and my wife! A lot of times we would drive our car so he couldn't smoke while riding.

Good for you!

I've never figured out why it is that smokers think that throwing smoldering rubbish out of their windows somehow doesn't qualify as littering.

Someone thrwe a lit cigarette butt in some mulch as they were leaving a Pizza Hut nearby yesterday. the ensuing flames caught teh building on fire and caused quite a bit of damage. People are so stupid!! It's dry around here too with low humidity and breeze!!

Seeitrun my dad does that, even though his car has the smoker's package that includes the crummy little butt bucket they're charging $25 for (when the ones you buy at the auto parts store are like $6 AND are the self-exttinguishing kind). You should see the inside of his vent shades, his outside window, and his door, after he's gone a while without washing the car. That's why I use the ash tray. Sure it's a pain to empty them out every few weeks, (Everyone I know smokes except my mother) but it beats dirtying up the car needlessly and littering about.

Also, parking cars with cataylitc converters over dry brush can cause fires, these things get in the thousands of degrees. Be careful where you park in the wilderness, or even in ungroomed city places.

Well if courtesy and common sense don't work.........

to limit flicking one's butt out the "winda".........
Parking lots now have cameras. Wait till the offender gets a nice fat summons or arrest for starting a fire.

[Welcome to your cell. This is you new roommate Bubba who has a chipped tooth and severe halitosis. He is a known buggerer. In the meantime: Cavity search!]

At family get togethers

Most of my in-laws smoke (1-sister-inlaw and 2-brother inlaw). And then my two brothers, sister and my dad smoke. When we have family get togethers I normally put on our back deck a flower pot with sand in it for the butts to be put into. Since we have a wooded area behind out house I figured this was a nice safe idea. They STILL throw their butts into the woods, in my yard. I even found them laying on our window sills. One of my brother-in-laws when they come for an extended visit can't go to the crapper without a cigarette. I finally raised enough hell about it till he finally stopped it!

I have a reputation around the family about my fussing about where they throw their butts! Sometimes they show them too! Another day another story!

What I have noticed is that almost exclusively, younger female drivers who smoke have adopted the practice of hanging their cigarettes out the window so as not to smoke up their cars. Hello? Aren't you exhaling inside the car? I really don't appreciate your smoke wafting in my direction while you hang that thing out your window, which seems to happen far too often while I'm stopped at a light. Keep your smoke to yourselves, thank you very much! And I can only speculate on how many of these butts end up on the street instead of in the car's ashtray where they belong.

Thank you selctomatic

I agree. As a person who swept the sidewalk every morning in front of the store I worked for for eight years I too can not fathom why smokers dont see thier filtered butts as litter.

I am seriously addicted to soda. I know what an addiction is but when that can is empty I still have to show some responsibilty and find a trash can for it.

Just suppose our streets were littered with one can for every butt.

But hey Id rather have swept up thousands of recycleable cans every morning. Itd have been like additonal pay.

Oh even better, I was at a CNG fueling station last week for busses. Despite big 'NO SMOKING' signs everywhere, not to mention gas detectors, smoke detectors, etc etc etc etc....

Yep, I counted about 50 butts by the fueling pumps. They're blowing gas in at 3000psi into buses and smoking? I tried to stay away as much as possible....

I had one site that had an O2 injection system, and workers were smoking near it. The engineer on site wasn't too thrilled. to see THAT
