1976 BOL dryer
This is a 1976 model dryer, but I think they were manufactured into 1978. You can tell by the Kenmore / Heavy Duty logo on the left of the little "consolette" or whatever we want to call that. The logo matches what was used on all the black panel machines of the time, beginning in 1976. I saw dryers like this dozens of times at the Sears stores in Littleton and Aurora Colorado. I was always fascinated by the lack of a console and the timer up front on the cabinet. You push in the timer knob as a 'push to start' feature. There was a matching 24-inch single cycle washer, which I believe sold for $199 on the floor, regular price. There was a long-running 1972 version as well, which as Arthur pointed out sold for just under $100 for many years.
The final versions of these did have a 20 minute air-only cycle, but from what I remember some earlier versions may not have. I think there was a dryer of this basic appearance through most of the 60s, even as far back to the belt-driven blower models, but they all had the chrome knob which is mentioned above.
There were indeed two versions of the 1976 model, the absolute BOLiest had the bulkhead mounted lint screen, and the step-up had the top mount. Seems like a huge feature add-on to me. I have no idea what that translated into in terms of price between the two. Oddly, my Whirlpool parts catalog says the first model (110.76615100) has the 5200 watt element and the second (top mount screen 110.76616100) has the 4400 watt element. Strange...
The odd color paint patches on the machine is touch up paint which either has yellowed, either over time or due to heat, or was Almond paint from the start. My 1978 Kenmore dryer had some touch ups done on it by the service and repair guy whom I bought it from. This paint yellowed in exactly the same way within 7-8 years.
Cool dryer!
