Hey,

Rich and I picked this unmarked (brand) unit up a couple weeks ago and just delved into it this morning. The motor, which operates on both a/c and d/c isn't working. We've traced the (a/c) power lines and they get to the lugs on the end of the motor (one lug is circled in green). Then, the power feeds into that little box, and two wires come out and attach to lugs on the side of the motor- apparently where the power gets to the motor. I can't get any reading on anything coming out of that box, so my assumption is that the box is bad. What is it? Maybe a voltage regulator? It isn't attached to anything else other than the mounting screw, and there are just the 4 wires- 2 in and 2 out. We can't find any brand markings on the unit or motor except for on the motor mounting plate (next pic).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

little box

little silver box on back of motor appears to be a noise suppresser to prevent
electrical"noise"from the motor's brushes feeding back.black part below with
plunger looks like governor switch. How many speeds does the phono have?-most
american phonos before Ca. 1948 just had 78 rpm-don't know about german ones.
Looks like there is electromagnet speaker field magnet-with U.S. radios and phonos,
an elecromagnet speaker usually means pre-ww2 vintage.

Motors

I would say that is an AC brushless motor and the box is a kick start capacitor, lovely old Dual motor :-)

The speaker be careful of as the transformer isolates it from DC (about 100v at a guess) from the amplifier.

I could be wrong i could be right though :-)

Good Luck

Don't fully get the beginning-can the TT run on both AC or DC-usually on "Dual" brand TT's that brand mens the motor can be wired to run on 110-120V,220V-240V AC power. The transformer on the speaker does match the high impedance of a tube amplifier stage to the low impedance of the speaker voice coil. The electromagnet coil runs from the power supply that operates the tube amp.Sometimes the coil is in SERIES with the B+ supply to the plate voltage for the amps tubes-it acts as a filter choke to further filter hum "ripple" from the rectifier stage in the TT amp.To run from 120V motors windings are parralled-for 220-240V wired in series. The box on the back of the motor-maybe a start-run cap for the motor.show more pictures of the inside of this set-very interesting.then it may be easier to make out what is to be going on in the player.Oh yes-if the unit is to be run on 50 hz or 60 hz power-are there two motor pulleys inside to match the motor speed? You put the proper pulley on the motor to match to the powerline frequency-have had to do this with other TT's or tape decks.(Capstan)

I also think it is to stop noise from the motor to say screwing with a am radio. Try a to tap it a little and then add power. I had one in my electrolux vac that was shot. If that is what this is you might not need it at all.
