That's a steal by today's standards. Duke's isn't widely available here in the Northeast, except for The Fresh Market- and I believe that's because they are based in North Carolina, so, their store in Westport, CT. carries Duke's. It is however usually priced at $5.99 per jar. I did find it at WalMart on line for $4.99, so ordered a few jars along with a few other things I needed. Actually I am amazed at how much mayonnaise I use. Between sandwiches and tuna, egg and chicken salad, and of course on hamburgs, it adds up. Next application will be the Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake from Rose Levy Beranbaum's Cake Bible. Haven't had mayonnaise cake in many years, but one of my older neighbors used to make it regularly for her family so we always had some when we all played together. It sounds weird, but the mayo takes the place of the eggs and oil or butter in the cake so it does work. I understand the recipe was developed by the wife of a Hellman's mayo salesman as a way to increase sales. It also might date back to WW II when certain items were rationed. Either way, it makes a moist and tender cake and you would never know there was mayo in there.
