Hello all...I just bought an old Maytag model E2L wringer washer. The agitator and wringer rollers work fine but the button to disengage the agitator is stuck in the on (pulled out) position. I haven't looked at it yet but wanted any input before I do something wrong. Any ideas on what could cause this and what I might try? Thanks for any info.

You need to look under the machine
follow the shaft attached to the knob back to the gear box. There is a small linkage arm that attaches the shaft to the transmission. It may be binding up somehow. There is also a hoop shaped wire that goes inside the gear box ( I can't remember what that does,)
The shaft is very close to the tub bottom at the front of the machine and will require tipping the machine to see it.
Tipping It will cause grease to come out the weeping hole in the top of horizontal shaft the houses the gear for the wringer post.
Find the hole and some how plug it. there is no way( I was told) to replace the oil with out teardown.
My guess it is around 1/8 - 1/4 in diameter.
The expert is phil at [email protected]. He sell parts on the bay. And is very helpful and informative.
He has years of experience repairing and servicing maytag wringers.
Possibly someone else here has another suggestion.

Thanks for that info. I went out and played with it this morning. It turns out that the lever does function. When pushed in, the agitator still moves back and forth but not as forceful. I put 10 gallons of water in the tub and tried it again. With the weight of the water the agitator barely moves when the button is pushed in. Maybe that's normal? I can live with that. When the button is pulled out it agitates just fine. The other thing I noticed was the agitator actually came off the spline and was floating in the water a couple times. Maybe if I had a load of clothes in the machine that might not happen? The spines look undamaged. The agitator is turquoise in color. I guess that's better than having it stuck on the splines like I've read about here. I mainly bought this to use the wringer when washing cars and using a chamois. Not sure if I'll use it for washing but I like things to work properly. Thanks again.

Does the center spline move with out the agitator on ?
The floating issue:
At the base of the metal spline is a (or should be) a rubber ring that slides in to a notch in the spindle. when not dried up will hold down the agitator
With laundry in it it should not float.
I have one machine that has a stuck agitator. and one that floats.

Try a little WD40 or penetrating oil ...
It may be that the grease has simply coagulated and hardened around the "post" that enters the gear box. Also check to see that the spring wire is properly attached. I've attached a page from the Maytag service manual (rev. 1997) showing the mechanism.
BTW, the rubber ring mentioned by "tinkr" is called a "stop ring" and a replacement can be purchased from Phil. I've seen these on ebay.
