Is it common for the upper head of the wringer to raise up when a thick item starts through the wringer, such as a towel? Mine has a tendency to raise on the one side.

Thanks

Fred in Pomeroy.

Could be due to a couple of things...

The wringer cap is connected to the spring tension, therefore it is designed to separate from the lower housing somewhat to allow for thick articles.

First - are you starting the item centered in the middle of the wringer? If not, that would be the correct procedure to ensure even pressure on the article.

Second - there is a possibility that the spring tension is tighter on one side than the other. This could cause the cap to raise on one side more readily than the other.

Where is the spring tensioner? I have a manual on order. Not seeing anything like a spring tensioner. Is there a schematic available?

As per the service manual (revision of 1979) ...

I learned that the tension springs cannot be adjusted to increase tension. You will find those if you reach up under the wringer housing - or you'll see them clearly if you remove the entire wringer assembly. There are nuts that secure the tension springs, but the manual states that tightening them will actually NOT increase tension. I had mistakenly thought they would respond the same as the tension springs and nuts in the earlier models A/30/32.

So ... back to the other possibility. Are you placing the wet articles centered through the wringer, in a uniform width and thickness, as directed in Page 9 (attached)? There is a definite technique to proper wringing. Wish I was there to give you an "in person" demo!
