Took a look today...

...and closed the deal.  By tomorrow they'll be in my basement.  Pics will follow then.

 

The owner used the washer as recently as a month ago and the dryer in January.  He quit using the dryer because "it wouldn't ever shut off."  First guess would be that the electrolytic capacitors in the sensing circuitry have drifted.  They have obviously been used a lot but were extremely well taken care of.  If you count the guy who's been in the house for 6 months, I will be the 3rd owner.

First off, CONGRATULATIONS!

A Halo of Heat that will not shut off can have a problem that ranges from the simple to the nasty...

1) The little paperclip like link from the shut off solenoid to the control switch can be off or broken. (common)
2) Bad shutoff solenoid. (not likely)
3) The element can be grounded and won't cool down and let the cool down t-stat shut the motor off even though the control switch may have 'turned off' (common)
4) Bad cool down stat. (common)
5) Bad/broken control switch. (possible)
6) Bad electronic dry board. (uncommon)
7) Possible short across one of the sets of sensor bars in the drum (possible)

Do a little triage when they come home and let us know! Otherwise, that's a nice set!

Wow, those are in much better shape than they appeared to be in the CL ad!

Incredible machines! How I would love to help restore those classics to their original glory. It's ironic; Maytag washers have outlived the Maytag company.

 

Be careful cleaning that lint filter; it's not as hardy as the later versions. Soak the BOTTOM MESH PART ONLY in some Lime-Away overnight being very careful not to let any of the acid get on that beautiful chrome cap. Hot water and a brush should then do the rest easily.

 

If you have time, would you be able to post a couple of close-up pics of the gas flame emblem on the control panel and the model plate on the gas dryer?

They don't get much better than this. Congrats on a great find!

The price paid in May of '67 is considerably less than what the washer and dryer retailed for. Must have been friends of the dealer :)

Good for you

Great find, congratulations. BAJA's advice on the filter is correct, keep the silver part dry but soak the bottom in Lime-Away or CLR, and I used a fingernail brush and pushed through the holes, got out TONS of ugly fine crap. Now, a two-second rinse under the faucet after each wash keeps it spotless. And it does a fine job, lots of lint.

I happen to have a Halo-Of-Heat service manual, up to DG700 and 701, only slightly before your machine. If it can be of help, feel free to ask--
