Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I believe this one is a single-speed 1959 in Turquoise Green.  Model WA-650.  This one is the same model as the one that turned up a while back at an antique store in Western GA, and was purchased by a member in OH.  It has 2 cycles, choice of hot, warm, or cold wash temp, choice of warm or cold rinse temp, Water Saver switch, backlit timer.

Solid Tub GEs and FilterFlo Action

In the under lid instructions, there is a specific procedure to follow for a Water Saver load. Instead of putting the detergent in the filter pan, it was placed in the tub. When the water level reached the ridge on the Activator, the user could press the water saver switch. It was necessary to have the tub filled to the ridge on the Activator because water drained out of the sediment remover holes under the Activator during the wash and unlike when the FilterFlo was working, this water was not replaced. Unless the tub filled to overflowing, the Filtering system did not work. I remember a LOUD gurgling sound all through the Activation periods on Water Saver loads because the pump was sucking air.

I want this one despite my promise to stop collecting...

I'm trying to get this machine; I have the matching dryer although not in turquoise. I asked the seller for a little more information on the "seal" issue. We'll see.

Tom, your explanation of the Filter-Flo system is spot-on, including the noise. My Mother never bothered with the WATER SAVER because of all that and she quickly stopped using the filter pan because it was a royal pain to remove. Ours was a 1960 model and they adapted the Activator mount to hold the new plastic filter-pans. The new mount had ridges that were too close together so it held it too well.

They re-rigged this model as a two-speeder for the 1960 line along with the 950 S (without pedestals) to use up all the leftover parts I have to presume.

I don't think so.

I offered her twice what she was asking if she would cooperate in a pick-up with a shipper. I also asked her to post some pictures of the inside.

She sent me a confusing message asking me where I lived and how I would pay her and then a second message that just said GONE.

Oh well.

Don't take it to heart guys.

Sometimes when people list things locally on CL, FB or wherever they truly just want the thing gone and first person who shows up with cash in hand gets it.

Similarly many also have it in their heads that someone who "collects" appliances is either odd or nothing but trouble. Thus again when a local person pops up wanting to do deal now, well you know the rest.

Hopefully a regular contributing member nabbed machine and sooner or later we shall hear more about it. However one fears It could also be what sadly has happened far too many times in past with things listed on AW.org. Some lurker beat others to post and appliance will be heard about never no more. No it wasn’t me although I’d like to have had it I didn’t reach out. I try to let folks know I’m going after a machine in the post about the listing so my intentions are transparent. Ken I’m sorry you weren’t able to get this nice washer. A lot of sellers aren’t very accommodating today and I think a lot of that is due to scammers. While I completely understand that I believe they should be decent enough to tell us they aren’t interested in allowing us to get a machine versus no response at all. Once I get a seller to communicate I push for a phone call so both parties can feel a little better about the transaction. Even that doesn’t always work but I’ve had decent luck.
