I have decided to sell my 88 Mustang GT on Ebay. I have a broader audience of people that want a GT to restore there.
Does anyone who sells on ebay have any advice...do's or dont's for me ?
I am really encouraged. One 88 GT, listed as a project car, had no convertible top mechanism, carpeting, headlights, Looked like it had been sitting outside for years, etc...went for 1775. SO I AM ENCOURAGED. Another one had been wrecked on the drivers side went for 1550.
All of this perusing the internet for GT info and parts has just almost given me the bug to keep it and restore it myself. I know me. It will be in the garage, the same in five years.

PYA when you compose your ad (protect your arse).
Go through some ads and write down points you want included in yours.
Always include these words : SOLD AS IS, WITH NO WARRANTY OR GUARANTEE EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.

ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING AND/OR REQUEST MORE PHOTOS

FULL PAYMENT REQUIRED WITHIN 7 CALENDAR DAYS OTHERWISE I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CANCEL SALE WITH RESULTING NEGATIVE FEEDBACK. (or however many days you'd like over 7)

If you're accepting personal checks make sure you stipulate checks must clear beforehand. Or else clearly state that you won't accept them or other other methods you really don't want to handle.

Don't cheap out with just a couple of pictures on an item this big..get the package of 6 or more for the few bucks it costs.

I'll prolly think of some others later.

Thanks Pete !

Some things I have not thought about. With over 200,000 miles on the car I think Ford ought to pay for my car and I to do a commercial for them ! LOL !

For ultimate safety

Have the buyer go with you to your bank and have funds wired over, or a bank transfer.

I have heard that even if checks clear, your bank may still stick it to you. I would prefer cash for a car of that age.

That said, the 1987 to 1994 (specifically)Mustang GTs are one of the best values for a fast fun car in the world. These are totally underappreciated right now.

My 1987 the GT was fuel-injected, and had 225hp. The exhaust is stainless steel. I did not realize this until I replaced my clutch (at 182,000 on the original) and found that the exhaust system completely unbolts and comes apart...no rust, no rusty bolts.

A "toploader" style 5 speed, overdrive, hatchback for convenience, and power everything (windows, fuel door, hatch, door locks, map lights, fog lights) with the GT package. I have air that has never been recharged. The car is still fast and is very confortable too.

I have hung onto the car to give to my son when 16, and together we will keep it up and prep it for paint.

Watch for these cars to eventually appreciate in value.

Memories........

like the corners of my mind......... I had a 81 Mercury Capri GT... LOVED it, Midnight Blue with a pewter grey interior, then a Black 84 Mustang GT turbo, then a 87 Mustang GT 5.0 almost the same as yours Tom. I just loved those cars. I was always on the go in one of those, but alas, they were terrible in the snow in Michigan. (I grew up in Dearborn, so I was obligated to drive a Ford) Spent alot of time going sideways rather than forward.. Moved into Mercury Cougars from the late 80' to the mid 90's (of which, were no better in the snow) Had one Dodge Avenger (should have come with a cape) and now 3 Subaru's later, have to say I'm sold on them. Anyway, GOOD luck selling your baby, hats off to any car that gets 200,000 miles!!!! Ford should do a commercial with you! You shouldn't have a
problem selling it!! Take care, Jim

making it to 200,000

Well, it helps when your bro-in-law is a mechanic by trade and works at the most reputable repair shop in town. Although they were not inexpensive, they got the job done right. Too bad my bro-in-law would not work on cars on the side at home. Smart man :)

what PeteK said...

I sold our Honda Civic on fleaBay last November and could not have been more pleased with the transaction. I looked at the competition at the time and also checked out professional sellers with very high feedback ratings. We specifically stated AS-IS, etc. And the payment options were PayPal, Cash or Certified Bank (only) check and payment within 3 days. Expect to get some tire kickers that want you to sell it for nothing, to call them, etc. I liked that we didn't have to deal with phone calls and locals wanting to just come by and 'see' it. It was virtually hassle-free for us. If you know someone that can touch up the front paint for not too much I would say do it b/c the rest of your 'Stang is so primo looking. Reds are hard to match tho' so it may not be worth it. And yes upgrade for several pics to include some of the interior and engine. You might want to check out Hemmings Motor News at a local Books-a-Million or Barnes & Noble to see what they are going for or a collectors club of which there are several...just my .02 :-)

There's a guy who hangs out at the airport who does nothing at all but sell cars on Ebay. He uses the airport terminal as a backdrop for his photos. He said he makes tons of bucks doing it. It's great because once he gets his money, the car has three days to be on it's way and he doesn't really need to do anything with it. He sells about 4-5 cars per week. He's sold everything from motorcylces to brand new Hummers (at a premium price, too!) For a few weeks he was doing nothing but selling slightly used Mini's (The BMW version). He said they would go very quickly!
