Editing Miele Settings...

I read somewhere, probably on here (lol) that my Miele W1215 washer could have it's options/programming changed and that what the sensitive buttons does can be changed? Currently, it adds a third rinse which adds 15 or 16 minutes to the already long cycle, the Normal cycle without any options selected is already 59 minutes long. I know there are a couple options as to what the sensitive button can do and I know one is the simply raise the water level on the wash and 2 rinses... I'd like to set the Sensitive button to do that instead of an extra rinse. Is this possible? I generally find that whenever I do large loads of towels in the machine, I have to use that extra rinse option and end up waiting even longer for my towels to be done! I know that the machine can clean everything very well with the amount of water it currently uses, but my old habits are kicking in saying it needs a bit more water and I don't really feel like trying to add the water manually or anything, I'm sure the machine would freak out on me! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

The manual I downloaded for my 1918 includes pages on how to program certain features, such as extra water during cotton washes, extra rinse, etc. The Canadian Miele site is a bit more friendly than the US one, and provides better access to older machine manuals.

But, I don't see any mention of programmable features in the manual for the W1215... :-(

On both the Miele 1200 and 1400 series there are ways to program the washing machines that allows one to access "dormant" settings.

Basically, IIRC since Miele sells said units all over the world, while the machine including the motherboards/computer may be the same, some settings are turned off for machines sold in the United States. However if one knows the programming settings (at least according to those over on THS), some functions can be restored/accessed.

Apparently some time after the 1918 but before the 1215, Miele decided that consumers in North America were not to be trusted with the "Programmable Functions" information. This would explain why it's available in the 1918 manual, but not in the 1215 manual. Such is the price of progress.

You've got it!

Now, let’s start our "Teach Yourself Miele 8440 Programming in 24 second"!

1. Open the drum door.

2. Press and hold the "Pause" button until the washer shuts down.

3. Press and hold the "Start" button, close the drum door while holding the "Start" button.

4. After the "Start" button indicator flashes one time release the "Start" button.

5. Press the "Start" button five times (very important, you should start pressing button immediately after step 4) and hold on fifth until the display shows "programming mode" .

Bingo!

Display will show the very first programming option, "Reset", so you can always roll back all your programming & tweaking wrongdoings.

Now, as an equivalent of the first "Hello World" code, let's program Miele to add extra water in the rinsing cycle.

Press left menu button to scroll through the programming options until the "Water+" entry shows up.

Press the right menu button ( under "OK" on the display). You are now in the "Water+" submenu. Press the left button to scroll through the submenu. The following option will be available:

Water+
Extra Rinse
Water+/extra rinse
Back

Stop on the "Water+" and press the right button ("OK").

"Water+" will change to "Water+^"

Press the left button and scroll to the "Back", then press the right "OK" button, you will return to the Main Menu.

Scroll through the menu pressing the left button till the very last entry - "Exit", then press the right "OK" button.

Congratulations, you washer has been successfully reprogrammed, more water on the rinsing cycle, bigger numbers in your water bill.

P.S. Don't tweak with the options you don't understand, consult knowledgeable Miele support representative first. I also would not recommend to play with the country version, low water pressure option etc, use your common sense!

I wonder if they have the way to access the 4800 to increase the water like the 4840. Thats kinda neat that it can be done. I would love to tweak the water level a tad on my 4800

Many thanks to Edward (Eddy1210)way up in freezing cold Canada for calling Miele Canada and sharing instructions on how to access hidden cycle modifiers for our W1986 models. We talked about the machine before he bought his. Now, when I use a Cottons cycle, the cycle defaults to three high water rinses and adds 10 extra minutes of rinsing time. There is a way to get hot rinses which I am planning on using this winter. My gas water heater is on a timer because it uses electric ignition and has a fan for power venting. Because of the timer, the water heater operates for two hours a day now, from 4 to 6 PM. Once the incoming water gets colder, the hours of operation will probably be 5 to 7 PM. That way, when I start a washing before 4, the tank will have the water that has been cooling since the evening before and has had some of the hot water replaced by much colder water. The hot water that fills the three rinses will not be that hot and will placate my fobia about rinsing in very cold water in the winter. I also plan to have the washer drain into my set tub so that the heat from the water can dissipate into the house instead of going down the sewer. I am so grateful that Eddy bought the last W1986 in his part of Canada before it was hidden by winter again and for sharing the results of his research with me. My W1986 is the one washer I own that I can literally start and leave alone because it now does everything I want it to do without any attention from me.
