Electrolux Super-J Vacuum
Hi, Andrew--Nathan Thomas here, I will be glad to be of assistance in regard to dis-assembling your Electrolux Super-J. The first thing you will need to do, is to remove the top trim cover on top of the machine. Slide open the blower door, and remove the 2 screws, which will either be phillips or flat heads. Next, remove the phillips screw on the top trim that is near the bag door of the machine. After you have removed the screws, the top trim will come off. The next step is to remove 2 phillips screws that are on top of the cordwinder. After you remove the 2 top screws, turn the machine over and remove the phillips screw from the bottom. Your cordwinder assembly can then be removed. I sometimes take a rubber mallet and tap the black plastic on the cordwinder to get it out. After you have removed the cordwinder, then disconnect the 2 wires that are on the tabs of the cordwinder. Slide the little plastic hose that fits over a tab on the top of the cordwinder off of the tab so that you can completely remove the cordwinder assembly. To gain access to the motor unit: You will need an 11/32 socket, with a long extension. There are 4 nuts that hold the black or grey, motor cover on. Using a trouble light, you will be able to see the nuts, there are 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. Use a ratchet, attached to your extension and 11/32 socket, to remove the nuts. When you have removed all the nuts, you can then pull the motor cover out, and you will then see the motor unit. Disconnect the wire that has a 2-piece connector on it, the one end has little tabs, simply spread the tabs apart with your fingers and pull on the other end, and the wires will snap apart. Pull the motor unit out of the body of the vacuum. To Clean the motor unit: Loosen the 4 straight-head screws on the fan housings. If your fan housings are rusty, you will need to spray WD-40 around the bottom of the housings to loosen them. If they are not rusty, they should come right apart, if not, I take a hammer and straight-edge screwdriver, and tap all the way around until they come apart. There is a large nut in the center of the fan, loosen it, and then you can pull your top fan off. It's a good idea to label this fan "TOP". After you have pulled off the top fan, pull off the secondary housing, and your bottom fan will be underneath it. Remove the bottom fan, and label it "BOTTOM". You need to be absolutely certain that your fans are replaced in exactly the same order of removal, that is why I suggest that you label your fans. To proceed with the dis-assembly of motor unit, there will be a bearing/housing assembly you will need to remove. There are 3 phillips head screws, loosen the screws, and remove the bearing/housing assembly. Next, remove your carbon brushes, before pulling out the armature. You will need to mark your carbon brush housings, there is usually on the motor, by the brush housings, one side will usually have an "X" on it. Mark that side "1" and the other side "2", or you can use roman numerals "I" and II". Do the same on your carbon brushes, the "X" side mark the brush with a flat-head screwdriver, you don't want to push real hard, just scratch a "I" on the top of the brush, and a "II" on the other side. This will help eliminate any excess sparking. You want to assemble the brushes in the exact same order as removal. To Clean the fans, I usually take some dishwashing liquid and an old brush, but you can soak the fans in some warm soapy water, if you'd like. You want the fins in the fans to be as free of dirt as possible, as dirty fans impede the suction. As for the rest of the motor, with the windings--Use an old paintbrush, and an air compressor, and brush the dirt loose and blow it out with an air compressor. If it's extremely dirty, I use warm soapy water and an old brush, then dry it with a hair dryer. To assemble your motor and your machine, simply reverse the directions, and replace all screws in the exact same order as removal.
