Yes, that Areva web site I like has a quiz for you to evaluate your "ecological footprint" and how much energy you use. Living in a single home, my mother and I do very well - until it gets to "How many baths or showers do you take?". It seems the only way for us to save more energy is to take fewer baths and showers, that just can't happen if we want people to be near us! Could it be that Areva suggests this because they are a French company? There's other quizzes and games there as well.

BP also has an energy quiz, but they don't ask about baths and showers.

I am a big winner because I seldom drive the car, shower every other day and have a super efficient energy home. But the nunu heads didn't ask how much laundry I do or how many times a week the washer runs.

2.98 - a great big pig! I come out super-öko on everything except flying from Europe to the States - that seems to outweigh not driving, being a vegetarian, using renewable energy for heating, having a small flat and and and...
This test is interesting, but very flawed. I will retake it again soon, this time pretending I have a car but never fly anywere...bet I come out a better world citizen.

No, you don't have to cut back on cleanliness or on other necessities.

Yes, you can conserve plenty, with little impact on your real life.

My last electric & gas bill was about $60. This is not difficult. More later...
 
Well, not so bad---------

2.98, well, really not so bad. i do buy green power from PGE,, my local electric provider, I use a front laoding washer that heats all of its own hot water, well, i never thought that was bad. I use my car for business, but it is not a big one.I guess that I have always thought of myself more in a European kind of way.One to grow on:)
 
OHMYFREAKINGGOD, I scored a Disaster-level 5.54! Good grief, I feel like I try to conserve---I drive a small car that gets 40 mpg/highway, I've always used appliances that save water, I don't water my lawn, I have flow restrictors in the shower and I shut the water off while I soap up. I recycle everything...

I guess that's what I get for living in a detached house by myself and eating meat, eh?

So, I went back to try the test again, thinking I might have done something wrong. Oh yes, I DID SOMETHING WRONG all right, but it worsened, rather than improving, my score. I checked the list of countries that use mainly fossil fuels and found I should have checked that one, rather than the +/- option I chose the first time.

Now I'm up to 5.74!
 
3.48 here. I guess my last year trip to the convention is part of that. For the rest I don't use much energy (I go to work by bike for example). In this quiz it is assumed that the Netherlands is a fossil fuel country, but that is not right. We have many windfarms and other alternative forms of energy. And I'm buying green power. No question in the quiz about that.
 
Areva probably needs to change the quiz a little. Finland is near you and they are building Areva's first EPR - the European Pressurized water Reactor. If you type in "50 months in 300 seconds" there is a dramatic video on the web site about it. Overall, you probably did well but what are we supposed to do about taking fewer showers?

I think this test is flawed, but hey - at least it gets us thinking.
By the way, NeptuneBob, even if the French can be at times frustrating, they have (sadly) been dead right about Irak and that Bush was making a mistake.
I don't want to start a flame war here, but the attitude that you either stand with us or you are against us led to the loss of thousands of young American lives. I sure am not going to even try to defend the "European" standpoint here, but the genuine concern and support the US saw after 9/11 and again after Hurricane Kathrin was genuine. It is just awfully frustrating to see a friend do something you knew was contra-productive.
Yes, the French can be arrogant. Yup, we Germans have not missed a single opportunity to remind you that we were right...but maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea to rethink the whole slamming your friends thing?

LOL, I actually said windfarms, not windmills. At the moment we're working on a windfarm in the North Sea. That means there will be built modern windmills. Not the wooden ones. Those were designed way before there was electricity. Would be a cool sight though, a whole row of old fashioned wind mills at sea.
 
Windfarms are great, but...

Out here in the SF Bay Area, there's a famous mountain pass where wind farms have proliferated. But at any one time, over half of them aren't operating.

I recently happened to talk to a gent who used to work on the wind turbines. I mentioned that many if not most of them weren't turning. I wondered if it was due to equipment problems.

He said no. The reason was that the windmill owners had negotiated price agreements with utilities, and it turned out the prices were too low to make a good profit. So they simply shut down the windmills. The ones that remained turning had better price deals. But he said the owners of the shut down mills were happy anyway, because they'd gotten their government subsidies and tax breaks.

Such things apparently happen all the time in the land of the free lunch.

I bet there are enough folks in your area that have a clear mental image of just that from 1953. Probably not something to mention to an older person.
It is interesting to note that both the Netherlands and the Danish are harvesting the wind like mad while we Germans are running around having our usual "Grundsatz" discussions on the evils and possible evils and potential consequences arising from the hypothetical application of wind-farms to non-migratory birds.
Meanwhile, the rest of Europe is using the technology invented right around the corner from me here in Munich together with some great old Dutch ideas to make serious inroads against the energy problems we face.
Still, we are up to 12% energy coverage using renewable fuels here in Germany. Not bad, unless you look at what the Dutch and the Danes and even the Norwegians (who have a wee spot of oil they can call their own) have managed.
The US could be leading the world here, but sadly the current administration would rather give tax breaks to the big oil companies than to invest in the future energy security of the country.
Oh, the French and bathing. Actually, that is sort of like the toilet-paper myth. They bathe much more regularly now. At least as often I remember us doing in the backwoods of Colorado in the 60's.

Rich, there are several windmills along the PA Turnpike that are actively producing power and Governor Rendell has approved for more. According to the kiosk at the Somerset Service plaza they shut off if the wind is too high to prevent damage.

One thing I always wondered - Why are European washing machines like Miele so good with their long cycles, that is, would they have to be so effective if people just bathed and showered more often?

Oh, and Rich, you might enjoy the George Westinghouse Museum if you are in our area, they have a display about nuclear submarine there.

You are just being plain silly. Why, only last week we took our semi-annual bath. An old European tradition.
Well, ok, it was a voluntary bath. Nobody made you - this is a democracy.
But still, at least once a year we all have to have one...
Seriously, there are still a lot of Europeans who will launch into a passionate discussion of protecting the acid-balance of the skin (Saureschutzmantel der Haut) and how too frequent washing destroys this and blah blah blah.
I think a lot of this is just plain laziness, some of it is based on earlier (much earlier) cleaning agents which were awful base in their reaction. And most of it on a desire to just plain be individuals. Individuality is not encouraged in the US, it is over here.

I recall very old windmills powering generators built back in the days before rural electrification. No, I am not THAT old, but a lot of those were still around in my childhood. Wonder how well they worked?
Wind is something we have in northern Colorado, southern Wyoming...

Frigilux, I am not sure why your score was so high, is the the car trips, the meat eating, the lack of recycling?

Actually, you will find that the worst offenders are people who live in the United Arab Emirates. Makes you wonder what people who live there do all day - Drive all day, take plane trips far away, have all their lights and appliances all day and steak and burgers all the time?
