Didn't buy this, either... $3,000 was a bit out of our price range.  But it would have looked soooooo cuuuute in our living room...

Found a really pretty set of Pyrex bowls -- this will become our 'knock-around' set for every day use...  Everything, mixer bowls included, got a wash in the LKDW.

Turned the Lava Lamp on to see if it worked, while I was working on greasing and de-flouring ((errrr... note the spelling!)) the mixer.

Normally vintage Lava Lamps don't really operate as if they were new -- they're usually discolored and the lava never looks healthy.  This one is in great shape, and seems to be low-use.

Finished product:  Kenmore mixer!  Very well-built and relatively easy to work on.  Not sure who made it for Kenmore.  Anyone know?  Such a beautiful mixer!

Estate Sales

Like many other things were much calmer in the pre-Internet days. Then things were either word of mouth or classified advert and so forth. This often meant attendence was nothing like what one can see today.

Today the thing as become a career/profession on both the seller and buyer side. Sales are often packed and everything is often money, money, money.

One likes to browse and or "dig" when required without several "pros" breathing down one's neck "are you buying that?", or " I saw that first/was just going to pick that up". Yes well you didn't did you? And I got there first so tough cheese.

Primary Colors bowls!

I love those mixing bowls--lucky you for getting the whole set at once. And in like-new condition! Let me second the dishwasher caveat--the colors fade rather quickly with regular machine washing.

Great haul! Could you send some of those good sales south? Please?

Kenmore Mixers

Were made by Birtman, Hamilton Beach, and Westinghouse to name a few. The best way to find out is by looking up the model number on the unit. As with most all Kenmore products the manufacturer code is built into the model number.

The more one looks at stand mixers such as the one shown above I think they were made by Westinghouse.

I wonder if it was really possible to beat candy with this mixer at speed #7 in the Mix File (WH was big on their files like for the Roaster Oven and the washer and dryer). I beat candy with the KA, but it is heavy stuff. I wonder if beating candy could get the motor smoking? We had a Hamilton Beach carving knife start smoking in use. If it had not been for the handle which kept the user from touching the case with the motor, it would have been too hot to handle. We had an American Flyer electric train in the 50s with a fake steam locomotive. You put drops in the smokestack to make funny smelling smoke. That was the sort of smoke the knife made. It would have made a neat You Tube video, even better if it had caught fire.

I wonder how this was rated by CU when they tested mixers.

Kenmore!

These were made by Birtman Electric Co, same company that made the Bee Vac, Birtman was part of the big Whirlpool takeover, instigated by Sears in 57,Sears wanted the vacuums and refrigerators to be consolidated with the washers and dryers under one manufacturing management, so they schemed with Whirlpool to buy out Seeger Refrigerator co of Evansville Indiana, and Birtman of Chicago,But this mixer you have is exactly like my yellow one, 1956, and built by Birtman electric, later I believe Whirlpool let Hamilton Beach have the mixer production.

What great finds! And I agree that estate/garage sales used to be so much fun, but now they are so often packed early and picked over by the professionals... but there can be exceptions... this week Smitty found a really cool 1955 Frigidaire Custom Imperial Cold Pantry, almost totally complete and very presentable at an estate sale... and was able to nab it for me at a good price! So thanks then to Smitty, John, and Jason, we loaded that heavy all porcelain fridge into my van on Sunday and it is now home to get a beauty treatment or at least cleaning... pics to come soon!
