Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Those sort of electric ovens and such were very common until about the 1950's. Some were used as a primary "range"/oven for those living in cold water type flats, vacation cabins, and other places without cooking equipment, others used as a subsitute for larger appliances (especially ovens), during the warmer months.

Doubt if many of these were UL rated, and or would pass today's safety designs. I certianly wouldn't use one with wee ones about, as they do get VERY hot and take along time to cool down. My vintage WestBend "Ovenette" gets so hot on the outside it burns my oven mitts almost right through.

My Grandmother had a "black-box" oven that was simply a large steel cavity with two racks and a door that sat over one of the burners on her early-fifties Caloric. Made great chicken!

Lighted controls, That would of been Magic

My Paternal Grandmother continued to cook on a wood fueled range until she passed away in 1969, in summer a large noon time meal was prepared and left overs, for supper, were warmed on a 2 burner electric hotplate. She would of thought that new fangled stove in your post, a microwave oven. LOL, in summer as a kid i can remember it would be hotter than hell in there. She never complained, I doubt if she even popped a sweat. Dad always said she could do more with $1. than anyone he ever met in his life.alr2903
