Hi all

You might have seen a few weeks ago I mentioned a show by Garry Lavin called 'Every home should have one'. It was a great series on how our lives have been improved by domestic inventions the washing machine being one.

Well Garry kindly wrote to me and has uploaded some short clips. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, the BBC are not going to commission many other programmes like this. This is a real shame for us.

Was really entertaining and a shame that more aren't being commissioned.

BLOODY HELL Rob - write back to him and find out where the hell that recycling/storage plant is!
What on earth does a plant do sorting scrap machines through manuafacturers and down into series'!

95's all lined up, kind of seperated off from more modern hotpoints and, whilst he is chopping that WMA up, there is a group of Logics arranged behind him.

Where is it, where is it? We need to go, we need to go!

Hi Rob, many thanks for Gary`s links, I missed that show, pity its not the whole show!!!!

There are a few big sites like this up and down the country, especially due to the new WEE initiatives, there are also sites/companies that refurbish the most common machines, like the ones in the pic, Hotties & Hoovers, these are usually linked to social programmes offering refurbished second hand machines at a reduced price.....so not all end up in landfill and quite a lot are now stripped down completely for re-cycling!!!!

Interesting fact about the cast/concrete supports required for stability, the first three series of Hoover Keymatics/automatics had the weights attached diretly to the sides of the cabinet and not on the drum!!!

Hi all, I have asked Garry where the site was and hopefully I shall hear back soon. The program was a few years back so it may have moved on.

Garry has now replied to me and this is what he said about the site -

Like most of the stuff in the show - I found the recycling yard down the
road near me on the outskirts of Rochdale.
They removed working parts and refurbed washing machines and sold them on to
local 'cowboy' retailers. Its not there any more - but i suspect they moved
somewhere in the Rochdale area.
The one i cut in half was supplied brand new at the time - the rep also
brought along the transparent model that was also used in the series.

He also said that we should lobby the BBC in reshowing the series as there is hardly anything out there about it!

Hopefully a second series will be made considering some of the crap that is shown on TV.
