Nate, some friends here used to have a mid to late 80s belt drive (I let it go when the got rid of it cuz the belt broke). It used to do the water quick add inadvertantly thing off & on too. Now in your case, I THINK this is one of the "tags that prettty much doesn't have a timed fill, but a pressure-switch determined water fulfillment design. Maytag used to have in their literature the dishwasher worked regardless of water pressure. That also may have something to do with water needing to be added once all the sloshing and stuff got going.

Maytag did advertize a metered fill...and it was different from those of other dishwashers...but only that the fill time was extended...it was still timed for the most part. It would not sit there if it didn't get enough water. But the flow was unrestricted and if it filled in 45 sec's it would just wait out the fill time after the float was satisfied.
But I am positive that belt driven Maytags added about 10 seconds of water prior to opening the detergent dispenser in the main wash, about 2-3 minutes in.

You will have lot's of fun with this great Maytag!
Do tell us when you use it if the Timer "Chunks" while going through the cycles.
Are you going to build this one in? Or are you going to use it as a portable? Play with it awhile with your Magic Chef. It is so much fun to have two dishwashers. You will be shocked at how soon you fill both of then during the week.
If you do decide to build it in, save the outer casing and parts.
You will be stunned at how much these cases are to buy, if you can find them. Also, it is cool if you want in the future to convert another built in into a portable.

Oh please

converting a built-in into a portable.
Actually I switched the places with 2 Kenmores. One a late 70s computer control portable model with a 1982 BOL built-in. literally taking them apart, taking the tubs out of their respecive frames and switching them.
There is a certain feeling of satisfaction, for sure, but you look back and wonder, what wss I thinking. lol. It was fun. and they worked.
