To those of you who have 50's Customline ovens, Is your broiler coming on when you have the oven switched to bake ? Mine is but it's not doing it in the bottom oven. Is it supposed to do this ?

Preheat setting or feature.

Some beautiful old electric ovens like your Hotpoint have a "Preheat" feature that uses both elements to bring the oven to temperature very quickly when set to "Bake". The idea for this feature is that normally there would be no food in the oven to suffer from top heat while the oven is preheating. Once the oven comes to temperature, the top element would be cycled off.

Does that oven have a rotisserie?

Yes......

It has a rotisserie and we love it very much. It just seems strange that only the top oven does this because both selector switches and thermostats are wired the same. The only difference being the top selector switch, it has the timer wired to it and I checked for shorts (no shorted wires ) and both selector switches were tested for shorts and/or leaking current and are both good.

Bottom line question: does the lower oven broiler heat when the selector switch is set to Broil? If it does, the oven is operating properly and, as I explained above, top heat is not needed in the shorter oven during bake for top browning. My 1954 Frigidaire is the same way. The tall master oven uses top heat during bake, but the shorter companion oven does not. The manufacturers knew what they were doing.
