Well I think they are. This Sears mixer aka Hamilton Beach was ripe for the pickin today. It was so groady I was a scared to pick it up off the shelf, but a little degreaser and wipes and it's almost as good as new. It's essentially the same as the Philips (Hamilton Beach) next to it but lacks the handy little timer on the pedestal

Even better cause it was free

After finding the above mentioned mixer I set off with dogs in tow for a small vac shop across town in the hopes that I may find an old Hoover convertible or DAM if not another Connie. Well she said they hadn't any at the moment but had my number just in case, I spotted this Eureka sitting there and she gave it to me for free and refused any money.. How nice is that. It's in fair shape, not as well looked after as my Vanguard model but I like it just the same.
I'm already getting crowded in my new little appliance room and it's only been a few days. LOL

I have a question as well to all and any who do buying on Ebay. I've never bought anything off Ebay and don't want to use a credit card so I'm thinking about Paypal. Is everyone comfortable with it. Next question, have you ever been gouged you figure on the shipping?

PayPal Is Fine

Just use a major credit card so if something really goes wrong you can contact them to sort things out. PayPal does offer a "buyer protection" program but does not promise a full refund.

Being taken on shipping charges? Ohh yes!

Some sellers are fine, others ask for say $10 for shipping and the package arrives with only $4 postage. Not only that they use either any cheap beat up box they had/found lying around, or free postal service boxes. This means their cost of shipping was about nil, though one seller I called out on this told me I had to pay for his gas to the post office. When I pointed out gas as well as shipping supplies are supposed to be covered under costs of doing business, and recouped from sale proceeds, he got miffed. It's not my fault his tired old tat isn't bringing in millions.

To really cover your bases, look for auctions that have a shipping caculator included. One inputs one's postal/zip code and up comes various methods of shipping and costs. This way you know up front what is what.

Launderess

Thanks Laundress. I'll give it some thought. Today I received a parcel from a friend in Michigan, weighed about 5 pounds and the US postage cost her $8.50. I figured that wasn't too bad and it arrived fine out to western Canada

That blue Eureka is a beauty!

Pete,
That blue Eureka is about the same vintage as your Vanguard. I remember that model well from childhood, as one neighbor we got one brand new when I was 5 or 6.
Having only played with Hoover to that point, that cleaner was my first exposure to Eureka, and I thought it was pretty cool!

Yup, she's an all metal body machine and looks to be virtually identical to the Vanguard save the auto cord rewind and the box top fancier bag. Sounds similar and the motor amps are the same. They are nice to use, not library quiet but not annoying either. I'm not familiar with the convertibles etc.. are they noisy machines?

Convertible sound...

Pete,
Sound-wise a properlyu greased Convertible will be slightly quieter than the Eurekas.
They are very easy on the ears..
The problems come in when they are neglected, dry agitator bearings really make them ROAR!!

Something I just noticed/realized.

This vac states on the bag.. Twin-power AUTOMATIC.
Well it does have two speeds. but what the heck is automatic about it. It doesn't have auto carpet pile adjustment, it's manual, it doesn't have an automatic cord retractor, there's nothing automatic about it that I can see?

you can't grease a Eureka

Pete,
That Eureka should have the wood core brush roller, sleeve bearings, need no oil. The motor will have sealed ball bearings they need no grease either.
Hoover always used ball bearings in their agitators, which got noisy, and on Convertibles the lower motor bearing as well.
