Fed Up With Firefox

Help Support :

Almost always, server not found errors are due to ISP or network problems, not browser problems. Either your ISP's DNS servers are down or overloaded, or other servers on the network aren't responding.

If you're on cable and not DSL or dialup, and you get these errors more often in the afternoon and early evening, that's a sure sign the problem is with your ISP.

Nope, it's not the ISP or the DSL connection.

Error messages started happening with forced upgrade to Firefox 3.5.1. Didn't get fixed with 3.5.3.

So far, Opera 10.0 has fixed the problem.

Check out the Firefox community support forum. There are LOTS of complaints about the error messages, and it's not peoples' ISP's or network connection. It's a problem with the way the updated Firefox releases handle network communications.

Rich, did you get the same "server not found" errors when you ran Firefox in safe mode? I've read Firefox's user forums, and the only major issues reported with 3.5.x have been with third-party plugins, not with the browser.

Also, were you running any ad blocking plugins in Firefox? I've noticed that many web sites have recently begun to retaliate against people who block their advertisements. Everyone from Youtube (at least some areas of Youtube) to CBS will no longer play videos if access to doubleclick and other advertising servers is blocked.

If Opera doesn't block ads, or doesn't block them as effectively as Firefox, that could account for your better success with it.

I use Opera since version 4, when you still had to pay for it, it is by far, in my opinion, the best, safest and fastest web browser around. And is lightweight too. Plus I love mouse gestures and speech recognition in addition to the "quick dial" favorites feature.
The only down side is that there are some I.E. only websites that render incorrectly at times but there are workarounds to that issue and it only happens once in a while.

I, too, have had similar and intermittant

problems with the Firefox 3.5.x series, with our without adblock, in Europe and the US, on Linux, XP, Vista and Windows 7 RC1, in safe or normal mode.

But never repeatable enough to really put my finger on it. I'm running Chrome right now on each of those machines (except 7) until someone at Mozilla.org finally believes those of us having problems.

I have noticed that flash is involved in many of the pages not working, wonder if that flying fix Adobe did a few weeks back might not have broken something in Firefox?

Well:

There's retaliation, and there's retaliation. My pet peeve is companies that figure out ways to get around blocking software, and serve up their ads when you have tried not to be bothered by them. I will not use Netflix for this reason; their ads blast right through Firefox's blocker, and I don't deal with companies that resort to dirty pool to get my attention.

I saw the safe mode feature but didn't try it. Nobody on the forums has mentioned that it fixed anything, anyway.

Opera is working fine for me.

And yes, most people report their connection problems started with version 3.5x. I didn't want to downgrade to 3.0x, as I felt that sooner or later I'd want to update and FF would fall down again.

Plus, Opera seems to be blocking those annoying Netflix ads pretty well, so far. My biggest peeve about them was that while setting FF to open things in new tabs, the Netflix ads would open in a new window. Then, when I shut down FF at the end of the night, the Netflix window would still be open, and the next time I launched FF, all my previous tabs were missing, and I'd have to populate them again. Not a problem, so far, with Opera. Plus Opera has a more configurable pop-up blocker.

I used to work for someone who went to Netflix and scored big. I really didn't care for that person (all hat and no cattle) and have been turned off on Netflix for that reason. Their annoying pop-up ads only strengthened my dislike for the company. I prefer to "own" the DVD's I watch, anyway.

I had a lot of problems last weekend with both FireFox and IE 8 doing the same thing. I have cable internet, and called MediaCom customer service, and they did something to reset the modem and it has been working perfectly ever since. At first I thought maybe it had something to do with one of the routers.

Nope....

I'll stay with Firefox. Just tried some "test sites" on Opera and it didn't even open the program descriptions on TV Guide. Also seems slower than Firefox.

I'll have to give my ISP (AT&T) a call about the connection issue. It might be a combination of browser and ISP. Probably does need a reset. I have gotten a couple of connection lost messages today with Opera, which indicates that it's not just a browser issue.

Still, I think I'll stick with Opera going forward.

We have Firefox 3.5.3 and had no issues with it at all on our Mac.

I'm happy with it, and don't get the pop ups, and the ads.

I'm running 3.5.3 on all my computers, loaded with all kinds of add on's including ad blockers with zero issues. These are all kinds of computers --2000, xp, media center, vista and 7.

There are all kinds of software variations so odds are it's something peculiar to the systems affected. Not much help I know...

There was some speculation that Netgear routers were part of the problem... but some have replaced their Netgear routers with other brands and still had the connection problems with FF 3.5x.

I have a Netgear router... but so far Opera hasn't had the major issue with lost servers that FF 3.5x was having.

I use both firefox and opera.

I prefer Opera, but Firefox is catching up and I do find less trouble with certain sites with Firefox than with Opera. Though the new Opera 10 has fixed the trouble I was having with hotmail.

I use Linux exclusively these days, so I don't know if Win or Mac users will have as good a run as I do.

I love the Speed Dial feature of Opera, but there is now a third party plug in to give that function to Firefox.

I haven't really noticed either way myself, but I understand most independent testing rates Opera as faster.

Chris.
