Whirlpool Gas Combo

Congratulations John on the Whirlpool washer dryer filter nally ending up with you .

Your quite right on stating the obvious on sorting storage stuff out now either physically moving it in or locking down legally a transfer of goods in the eventuality of passing .

Looking forward to seeing it restored to working glory.

Cheers , Mike

clutch for the blower?

I was given an RCA Whirlpool combo in 1979,lady said 18 years old and would not spin-cable from gearmotor was broken. There was a solenoid actuated clutch at the motor pulley for the blower-not seeing this on the pics on the subject machine-or just hidden? Parents made me get rid of the washer after about a month of playing with it in backyard,so took the motor/pump,and the rest got pushed over a cliff :)

Early style whirlpool built combos 1956 through 60

Hi Brendan, it's neat that you got to see one of these machines even though you were quite young the things our parents made us get rid of, luckily my parents were pretty supportive of letting me drag old washing machines home. Do you still have the motor and pump assembly?

The last year these were made was 60 if it was an electric one it had a clutch for the blower. They turned off the blower except during the dry period, the gas models ran the blower for the entire cycle. There was a damper that was controlled by a solenoid in front of the lint filter so 90% of the air was blocked when the machine was washing rinsing spinning however there was a hole in the center of the damper to allow a little bit of ventilation because they ran the gas burner to heat the water during the wash cycle.

salvaged parts

I had the motor for a couple years after until i ruined it somehow trying to modify for another purpose... the pump was black bakelite, turbine type, and rubber impeller.Other parts saved included the door, all the pulleys except drum, controls and blower.About the next machine in line was a turquoise '66 SQ coin-op:motor/clutch was kept and repurposed and the two unique large bushing toggle switches are still around :)
