I've been using VLC for years.  Been sure to keep it updated to the latest version (currently 2.2.2), same as any other software ... except there is a bug in versions after 1.1.11 in that video content doesn't play smoothly on some AMD processors.

VLC for DVD

VLC is also a good program for playing DVDs from foreign countries. VLC does not require that the DVD be from a specific region. Standard DVD Player program on the Mac defaults to Region 1 (U.S., etc.). Although DVD Player can be changed to accept other regions, there is a limit of only 5 changes. Then it is locked into that region. I like VLC.

Yep - VLC

is great. It has a library file making it able to play dvd's. You can take that library file .dll file and put it in a certain "handbrake folder" (a converting program), and you can now back up your DVD's to mp4. It allows handbrake to see the DVD the same as it allows VLC to play it. I have a lot of my DVD's I've converted to mp4 so that I can put them on a large external drive to be played on a Media player via TV. I hate messing with/changing DVD's. I haven't used quicktime in forever.
