never hurts to start some Spring Cleaning....

changing batteries in the smoke detectors...

checking fire extinguishers.....

cleaning dryer vents....

clean refrigerator coils....

clean out drawers and closets.....

and other little things you been meaning to get to, but keeps getting put off...

none of it is thrilling, but it can help pass the time....
 
Today was partly cloudy and low 70's, so I was outside for a couple hours. The neighbor kid who's 17 was over, and we sat in yard about 12' apart and talked awhile - he makes me laugh, so that was good. Then I cleaned up some sticks and small limbs in yard and driveway. Afterwards I took a short walk, and went past a building in the middle of town that burned last Friday morning.
 
I sat down last night and made myself a "to do list" for my vacation that starts next Wednesday.  I have quite a few items on there to do.  If the weather will permit I just might get most of them done.  They aren't difficult tasks (except for the ceiling painting hurts my neck and shoulders). 
 
We went for a 30 min walk this afternoon and covered about 1.5 miles, usually would have been 2 miles in 30 mins, but I still can’t walk as fast as usual.

 

 I have still been doing my daily 45 mins. of exercise on the living room floor everyday since the injury, but I did leave the ankle weights off for the first 2 days of recovery.  This has not been unlike recovering from my two hip replacement surgeries. I do 150 ab crunches and 135 pushups everyday, broken up into three sets of 50 and 45, respectively, along with other leg strengthening and stretching exercises. Daily exercise is very important to maintaining good health, and I always feel better after I’ve done it.  Exercise is a great way to break the COVID-19 boredom, and its free.

 

 I bought a really good ankle brace at Target yesterday when I went shopping and it helped a lot.  I normally weigh myself everyday after my walk, I’ve fought excess avoirdupois all my life, and a daily check helps to keep me on track.  But since the injury 10 days ago I haven’t weighed myself.  So when I got back today I thought I’d better face the music, even if I still can’t dance.  Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find I’d actually lost 3 lbs.   Cutting down portions sizes while I’ve been laid up helped.  So, this was my good news for the day.

 

We only saw a handful of people, and everyone was very careful to keep 6 ft. or more distance.  The traffic is like it was 40 years ago when there was about 2500 pop. in or town which is now over 7000.  And on the news the shots of the Golden Gate Bridge look like it was in the 1947 movie “Dark Passage” in the scene where Lauren Bacall drives her 46’ Ford Woody station wagon over the bridge, maybe 5 cars, unbelievable!  People in the Bay Area are taking this serious as a Heart Attack, as they should, and with luck perhaps our fatality rate won’t be as high as other areas.  All we can do is our best.

I'm drowning in administrivia, none of which I really want to do, of course. aking the tiniest bit of progress..But at least I have the time now to tackle it. i don't want to look at it too closely, but I think I'm actually making the tiniest bit og progress.

Also slowly getting exercise back into my routine....

Thats a great post Barry!  I have a tendency to blow up like a balloon if I don’t watch it.

 

One thing that is keeping me from overindulging is the realization that the time may come, sooner that any of us can imagine, when we will be unable to get out of our homes at all to buy groceries.  

 

So with that in mind I have purposely reduced our portion sizes to make what we have go as long as possible.  We still  have dessert every night, but its most of the time jello with some canned fruit.  I’ve been baking a cake or some cookies once a week, and we make them last much longer than we used to.  

 

I know that I’m as full of sh*t as a Christmas Turkey with the old time sayings, but “Waste not Want Not” seems to be very apropos at this time.

The month leading into the 'Corona Shutdown' I averaged almost 6,900 steps per day and that average INCLUDES days off when I moved as little as possible. SINCE the 'Corona Shutdown' I've been under 500.... every ... single ... day.

No wonder I'm restless, bored, and cranky. Time for exercise!

Eddie, I can relate. I realized this morning that it's time for some major self discipline starting very soon, not being able to get out much these days, or even wanting to, I've been mostly doing 3 things: eating, sleeping, and surfing the net / watching tv. Even though there are a lot of chores and things that need to be done, I've lost interest. I'm just watching the world around me. I lost my Dad this last summer and it's been difficult since then, and now this virus hits. I try to get something done everyday so that the day is not totally wasted. Horrible.

Today I went out for a short walk. It was up to 60, and sunny, but still a little breezy. I wanted to see if the high wind yesterday blew down any of the walls of the old hotel four blocks away that burned a week ago last Friday. Fortunately, few if any more bricks had come down. The main streets in the middle of town are still closed.

I know how you feel.  Watching this all unfold is unbelievable and surreal, something I never thought I’d see.

 

It’s difficult to get away from it.  But having already been retired for 14.5 years I have found that I need to make my own routine and schedule, and this has helped me keep on track.  I still do my 45 mins of exercise every morning, in front of the TV watching the news.  And I do a daily walk everyday at least 45 to 60 mins.   Both of these things really help relieve stress.  I’m now getting back to normal with my right leg and walking more everyday.  Today I wore a mask the whole way.  And from now on I’m wearing one every time I leave home.  

 

As far as doing extra projects that need to be done, uh no, I’ve been letting these go.  But keeping up with the cooking , laundry, exercise and VERY occasional shopping  is enough for now.  Oh, and baking the bread too, also a stress reliever.

 

But one thing that has also helped me get things done is make a list of things to do.  Nowadays, that usually just a note, do XYZ tomorrow, and if I write it down, thats like an order to myself to do it, and I do.  Whatever works is what I say.

 

Anyway , I know how you feel, but hang in there and no matter what keep yourself safe my friend.  We can and WILL get through this!

Well,

here, just by nature, I expect the unexpected. I think thats from being a scout as a teen. I've cooked over a camp fire, etc. I have some firewood just in case for the outdoor pit, or the fireplace, and a full tanbk of propane, and charcoal for the hybrid grill. Our gas cooktop can be lit with a match so long as you don't lock it out before a power failure. Enjoying Instagram though.
Hubby on the other hand, has been buying whatever home gym equipment he could get, as we can't go to the gym. The barbel rack is ok, not optimal, but was the only one Amazon had in stock. the pull up bars that came don't fir the holes in it, so have to go back. The bench was too narrow and short, so had to be returned. A way more expensive one is comong today from REP Fitness. He bought olympic grade 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, and 45 lb. rubber clad weight plates, a tree for them, and easy S curling bar, a barbell for squatting, deadlifts, etc. A shorter crossbar for tricep work, a scissor adjustable commercial grade step up stand from 12 to 24 inches, and a physio ball. Our old Bowflex is ok for me still, but cumbersome. We have a few dumbells, and several bannds to improvise with, and a door jamb chin up/pull up bar. he even ordered the rubber interlocking floor for the garage.
The place is getting crowded, and I'm ready to call Love it or List it from HGTV LoL. Not that homes are even being shown, or selling. I also don't want a bigger place to clean, nor a larger yard to care for.
Our daughters mother in law in Florida has caught the virous from her daughter, who works in bar. She said it was so nice to see her last week, and hug her other grandson. Stupid! She is only in fair health, and in her mid 70's. Her daughters boyfriend and sons father thought it was still a hoax until last week. Just as stupid. Not to mention the Fla. governor.
