I'm not a big fan of whimsey, and crock pots seem to be the worst offenders in the appliance world, with their customary mushrooms, flowers, hearts, geese (with or without bows around their necks), etc.

So imagine my shock and suprise when I saw this butch little number lurking on the shelf at the Salvation Army!

Anybody know what an "auto shift" is?

I can't see what the settings are. I know that most crock pot recipes call for about 8-9 hours on a low setting. Maybe this automatically goes to a warm setting after 8 hours.

I love the brick exterior. I've never seen one like it.

You did it again ...

I hate to sound like a broken record, but you always find the coolest stuff! :-) I like it! I really like it! LOL.

The cooking time for many crockpot recipes can speeded up if you start them on "high heat" and then switch to "low heat" after period of time. The "autoshift" setting on some models, saves you a trip back to the kitchen, because it automatically switches from "high" to "low" after a certain amount of time.

Enjoy your new toy.

I can't wait to see your next find. :-)

According to the owner's book for my

early '70s Sears crockpot, the autoshift starts on high heat and switches to low heat after 1 hour, 45 minutes. I've never used the autoshift except accidentally: meant to set it on high but clicked over one too far, my food wasn't finished cooking after 6 hours.

Auto-Shift

is a marvellous innovation for some recipes, and a disaster for others. My Corningware Electrics brand slow cooker has autoshift, and I use it a lot, particularly when I make chili....I brown whatever meat I am using, and then combine everything else in the insert. 8 hours on autoshift, and it's perfect.

Mine shifts to low after about 2 hours.

It's bond!

A brick-pattern crock pot! FWIW the brick is laid in a Flemish Bond pattern, much more attractive than 5-Course Common Bond. The mortar really should be white, or close to it. Clean off some grease and see if it brightens up, if not, get out some lime-based mortar and a trowel and re-point it!
Nice find!

Remember, I am a historic preservationist,

I like it. Now I wish I had commandeered my mom's hamilton beach when they moved out of thehouse, even though I didn'thtink I'd need 3 crock pots.

I have a Hamilton Beach Crock Watcher with "Auto Shift" and the descriptions above are about right. Don't have the owner's manual in front of me to advise of the time frame but it's correct that "auto shift" starts on the "High" setting and then bumps it down to "Low" after a certain length of time.

I don't mind the design of my crock pot. It's the largest size and is mainly white, a good 10 years old and I think by that time they were less cutesy, but have never seen one with the brick motif. Great find!

The first edition of Mabel Hoffman's Crockery Cookery, which included a buyer's guide, advised using Auto-Shift for recipes marked "Low" and use High Cook for "High". The Low Cook setting on the Crock Watchers they tested was too low for safe long time cooking, especially for poultry and pork.

Mabel Hoffman expert crockpotter

... And I thought I was the ONLY one with Mabel Hoffman's cookbook. Did she not analyze crockpots to death or what???
Indeed, Dalangdon's crockpot is the butchest thing next to a NASCAR Crockpot (if such a thing exists).

Slow cookers and Crockpots

Are exactly the same thing- the Term Slow cooker is more common over this side of the pond tho. Kenwood also do a curry cooker- again its a slow cooker with another name.....

In Canada trademarks never become generic. i.e. only Bayer can call their product Aspirin all the other makers have to call/label it A.S.A, the short form for acetasalycylic acid. Same with Kleenex brand, all others have to call them tissues.
